Hello,

I know this was mentioned before in another thread but did someone find out the possible cause of this?

It only happens when you're driving at highway speeds and it only smells on the driver's side rear wheel...the first time I noticed it I thought it was caused due to heavy braking but then it was only on one side.

any thoughts??

hmm thats odd the only time i get that smell is from heavy braking so you might want to run to the dealership. is your e-brake on even slightly?

Just the nature of the beast, so to speak. Ever ride behind a big rig that had to slow down suddenly? You'll get the same foul smell. As heat builds because of friction between the rotor and the pad, the pad begins to vaporize and give off a gas. That's the smell you get. This gas can cause problems with braking since it creates a bubble between the rotor and the pads. To help prevent the heat generation and vent the gas you can switch to a vented pad, drilled and/or slotted rotors. Drilled rotors have a history of cracking around the holes.

Assuming that you know the difference between the smells of burning rubber and burning oil, then I have a similar but different problem.

Please don't think I mean that first statement in a derogatory way, since rubber, brake material and oil all smell very similar when superheated. However, the smell I'm getting is that of motor oil on a hot metal surface (ie., exhaust pipe), not that of the engine burning the oil, which actually is another smell to add to the list.

All that being said, my smell was coming from both the rear driver and passenger sides, but mostly the driver's side. After about 7k miles, the smell has disappeared, so I can only assume that it was some sort of petroleum-based assembly lube burning off.

Please keep us updated on what your dealer finds.

Cheers!
