My CA is almost complete, just waiting for wiring but I was curious: Who out there has an atuomatic transmission and how easy is it to burnout, or get the car into a slide?

a - no one has an auto CA that I know of...

b - give your post more than 4 hours to get a reply... we're kinda slow in here.

honestly i think you're going to have alot of trouble getting a stock CA with an auto transmission to do a burnout of any kind. theres so little torque.

i have seen an auto s13 ca18det do one of the biggest burnouts i have ever seen, new year night about 5 yrs ago and about 150 metres long.

stick with the auto, you will be surprised how much they can handle with some minor mods.

well, the reason I got the CA was because my atuo KA transmission went out on me, but thanks for the info one bell housing swap! I'll keep it in mind if I do want to switch to manual. Thanks for all the input guys.

I have a auto CA18DET S13, it does reasonable burnouts and the tightest doughnuts I have ever seen a RWD do. I don't rate it for drifting etc and in my opinion the motor doesn't have enough torque to suit the auto, the manual is much nicer to drive.

<hijack>undertaker, is the store in your sig yours? If so could you email/post a street address? Tomorrow's my last day in Wellington before I head back to the States and it'd be cool if I could drop by and see the place.</hijack>

If you're looking for burnouts with an auto, look towards the old school drag crowd. Autos are pretty much all that's run there; some of that tech should be adaptable. There's always a line lock for the front brakes if you're desperate to smoke some tires.

Its not my store but I know the owner well, I'll send you an email today. For some reason I can't use IM oh

Back on topic, cheap auto mods I'd apply are the aforementioned line-lock, a trans cooler and a switch or controller for the 'soft-shift resistor', removing this gives impressively brutal shifts

doesnt removing that resistor make it very hard on the transmission? i would think it would, though i could be wrong.

Where is the soft shift resistor located?

on a RHD silvia just in front of the strut tower on the extreme left hand side of the car, fairly close to the ignitor and power steering res. its a small rectangular box with a two wire plug.

If the CA transmission works the same as it did on mustang automatics then the soft shifts are actually harder on the transmission. I forget the details (its been something like 8 years since I really read up on domestics) but the soft shifts are harder on the "synchros", or whatever their technical equivalent is in an auto. Apparently the average consumer doesn't like harsh or loud shifts, hence the soft setup.

It's on the left hand side of the car. In front of the Strut Tower. Small Rectangular box w/a two wire plug.
