I thought it was just that it needed I need an oil and an air filter change, but when i come close to the red line I get a slight but noticable burning smell. It doesnt smell like a transmission or clutch smell, any ideas. oil and air where change smell still there.

Check under your car for any plastic bags or something that may be sticking/melting to the exhaust and burning.

I know exactly the smell you're reffering to....I had smelled it twice, (The car is still in break-in...only 65 miles to go...)but....yes...I've laid into it about 3 times now.....nothing crazy...maybe 5500 rpm'ish....

but....I have smelled "that" smell...it hasn't been really hot here so I normally run with the vents open...a nice direct path from the engine for the smell......

I see no leaks...but...you really can't see $&#% anyway, with the covers on the bottom of the engine compartment no light gets in...and it's not like you can just see everything from the top....

I'll do my first oil change this week (gonna do it at 1200 miles)...so I'll be taking off the cover under the engine at that time and having a good look around at things....

I'll let ya know if I see anything obvious....

SO

Are you saying that the "smell" badboy00 is smelling is due to the engine break in smell? I hope not because badboy00s car is a 2005 and I imagine the break in smell should be gone after 2 years of driving.

oil pressure gets quite high in those rpm ranges, do you have any fluid leaks?

WHAT THE F#%$ Is that smell I get it ALL the time (04 track) it is really bugging me and it is keeping me from having fun cause I feel like something is wrong. just smells like burning at high rpms in 4th 5th 6th i suppose because of how long it takes to shift under load at high rpms. man i thought I was crazy

thats a good idea but I dont get why the exhaust would burn anything its all stock. I just got it used last week it has 25,000 and now today i did a first gear pull and got a big whif of it annoying the crap outa me. but it really can only be the exhaust heating something up huh

could be a lot of things i think, the high exhaust temps off the headers radiating to the plastic components could be a possibility. Heat wrapping i think is a pretty safe thing u can do that u wouldn't go wrong with.

You could add and intercooler to for the transmission also, get better operating temps... i'm not sure what the practicality of the mod is, but if ur running high rpms, and given the z's history with transmissions, it might not be a bad idea..

side note: has anyone installed the nismo R- flywheel? how did that turn out?

No, i know wat a burning clutch smells like.... thats not it. its not a burning smell, it smells kinda like the tire/engine cleaner chemical at the car wash, only i have not used that on it - ever, nor have i had the engine detailed for about 6 months.

Not to be a jerk, but if it's around redline is it your tires from getting on the car and chirping them or going around corners a little fast.

I definitely know the smell. I smell it whenever I bring the car up to high RPMs. It's got 1560 miles on it, now, and I STILL haven't changed the oil since I got it with 150 miles. I really gotta get around to it. I hope that's the problem. It does smell like it's coming from underneath the car, though... Maybe it's the transmission? By the way, I don't think it has to do with the clutch or flywheel, because I get the same smell and mine's a 5AT.

It's probably just the car breaking itself in. Unless you see smoke or the car starts to act horrible I wouldn't worry to much.

not to be ignorant or anything, but whats a 5AT? I commute to my job 40 miles one way everyday, and when i commute those miles in my z it will have tha t smell coming through the vents when im at a stoplight, after getting off the highway. now if i have my air conditioner running it doesnt smell, or if i have the heater on it doesnt smell either. I normally use my honda del sol when i commute because it it better on gas, so i dont use my Z everyday. i have no clue what the smell could be. when i got my oil changed they didnt see anything unusual, they asked me if i had recently had the car detailed because it sounded like engine cleaner burning off engine parts, but i have not had it detailed in quite sometime. I guess ill let you all know if someting ends up burning up or when something finally shows itself!

i think its the catylitic converter eating the extra gas from beating on it. i had a dodge avenger that did the same thing.

I have had that smell also. It got worse when i put on the super charger and hit a high rpm. At first i thought the clutch might be slipping, but what is was told is that it is running rich. Yes even on a stock z up high. I'm still not rulling out the clutch though!
