Thanks to all that replied to my last question. I just got back from test driving that 03 M45. MAN WAS IT SWEET!!! Loved the acceleration and handling. It was in real good shape, too.

Only problem I could see was when it was over, I opened the door and immediately smelled a burning odor. I went to the back of the car and saw a small amount of smoke (not steam) coming from the tailpipe. Is this a bad sign? You all have said that some M45s have an oil consumption issue and I was wondering if this was that or something worse. My current car burns a little oil, so I think I could live with that...just have to check it more often. The salesman didn't really have an answer to what it was.

Would an extended warranty cover any engine problems that might happen down the road because of this?

Thanks in advance for any help...I need to know quick, because I'm supposed to take the BOSS (my wife) to look at it tommorow!!!

whoooaaa!!! Probably needs an oil change, but you have to ask yourself; how long has it been since they or who ever had this car changed the oil. As hard as it may be, Dont buy it!!! burning smell? smoke from pipe? hmmm

If you are seeing white smoke coming from the tailpipe ... after the car is fully warm ... then I would be very leery!

This sounds like the dreaded engine oil consumption to me. Norm is about 1 to 2 qts per 3750 miles. Any more ... particularly 1 qt per 1000 miles ... and I would not buy the car.
