Just what I could do without. It snowed in MA on Friday 3 inches and not the sort of weather to working on the Q. Tonight after getting in from a long day at work I noticed a burning rubber smell from the front left side of the car. It is too dark and cold to mess with it now but I am not sure where to start to look anyway.

Any suggestions. I will need to drive it to work in the morning in it and I probably stop after a few miles to check it out

Took it to the shop today and up on the ramp they could see that the smell was coming from fluid which had dripped on to the exhaust system. They couldn't detect where it was leaking from and have added a detector which apparently will show up under a UV light. I am going to take it back after 500 miles of driving. They thought it could be a main engine seal or possibly coming from the sump but couldn't be sure.

Does the main engine seal on a Q typically fail. They also said that maybe it is another fluid apart from engine oil but that will be looked for if the UV test does not show anything

Silly rabbits. 3rd vote for valve cover gasket. I assume "main engine seal" means front or rear shaft seal? Those aren't near or above the manifolds.Slap on a latex glove and wipe your hand around the perimeter of the valve cover on the side the leak's on.

A proper description gets you a proper guess.

Squee,

I agree with you wholeheartedly, oil shouldn't smell like rubber, but I know my ds vc is leaking & it smells like burning rubber to me, too.

Now mine has gotten to the point I have to change it AND the ds motor mount this weekend because the oil probably helped kill the mount.

Is that an active Q?

If so check you Active system for leaks I had one that smelled very very bad like plastic or rubber burning.

Just a thought if the UV test shows no results.

I know how to fix an F-18 Hornet (USAF) but the Q45a is even more complex!

Sorry no cool car pick i'm @ work

Just by your description I must say valve cover gaskets. Mine needs RTV and the smoke comes right from where you described it. Facing the car left hand side towards the rear where the oil falls on the cat.

Sorry guys but it did smell like burning rubber, even the shop guy didn't think it was oil at first. However he checked everything out and found some type of fluid on the exhaust system at a position where he thought it must either becoming from a rear engine seal or sump gasket. I did not see where he was referring to as I left it in the shop all day while I went to work.

It does seem from all the replies that the valve cover is the favorite but the shop guys seem to think it is lower down. He did also say that because the smell was not a typical burning oil that it could be another fluid such as Power Steering fluid.

Yes the car is an active model and I didn't think of a leak from that system. I will check all fluid levels tomorrow when it is light

Not sure how that's even possible. Has he figured out the engine is longitudinal? And that it's a V-8?

It flew out of the front main seal then the wind sprayed it on the manifold. =O j/k

Good point about them not knowing how the engine is sitting by the looks of the upper intake manifold.

I bought this "Greased Lighting" when my GreenQ45a go her valve cover seals, TB cleaning , fixed many Active leaks and noticed this stuff turned the color or the fluid it was cleaning trans fluid was red, Active fluid was yellow, and engine oil was purple or grey I don't quite remember (It was April).

I really liked the FORD April fools thing.... Bastard's

Anyway was it was like 3.75 a bottle and a GREAT cleaner and a great troubleshooter. just spray it on and see what color it turns

What have you got to loose?? 4 bucks??

Justa thought...
