So my starter went up, I was pressed for cash, and really needed my car back on the road so i ended up getting one from AutoZone.:-(After installing the starter everything seemed to be just fine.. Shut the car off and restarted several times to make sure it was working properly... The following day while driving the car seemed to shut off and restart with in a split second. Like the lights on the dash came on and the radion went off and then back on again... I made a stop in a 7 eleven and when I hopped in my car it wouldnt start. Tried several times to start it when i noticed the smell of wires or something electric burning... Looked under the hood and the starter was smoking... I took the starter out and plan on taking it back... :-) But does anyone know what would cause that..? Was it simply the fact that I tried to start it so many times that it just over heated...? I mean even after 1.5 - 2 hrs when the tow truck finally arrived it was still really hot... When I got back to the crib I unplugged the battery lead from the selenoid... Any thoughts? Anyone...?

Hmmm.

It's possible that the starter gear isn't disengaging for some reason and that overheated the starter motor.

Sounds like an electrical problem. Probably just got a bad starter/solenoid. Take it back and get another one. I've had a AZ replacement starter for years, and never had any trouble.

Thanks guys.. I took the starter back and installed the replacement... The car started several times, but when started there was this high pitch squeal during turnover... I wasnt sure what it was... So i disconnected the battery and just left it alone... This morning i tried to start it again and now, you hear the starter spinning but the engine is not turning over.... I am thinking this means the spindle is turning but its not advancing. Could this mean the replacement starter they gave me is defective? This really blows...

It's possible that you got another bad starter (especially if it's an Autozone remanufactured part) but it seems odd that you'd have two bad starters in a row.

Was everything else working properly before the first starter died?
