Hey everybody
Need some advice...
The dealer is telling me that my MAF sensor is burned out and going to cost $1,000 to repair.  They blame my aftermarket intake, clamming debris  had to hit the MAF. Needless to say my warranty  is voided on the MAF. I recently very carefully cleaned my intake and replaced the filter. I've been search online for information  but haven't found much. Also, I’m wondering if it is possible to purchase an aftermarket sensor for a little cheaper and replace it myself. If so, not sure how the system calibration would happen, but I’m wondering if I could somehow do this for cheaper myself. Or if it is possible the MAF sensor just needs to be cleaned. Really any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Wth! The dealer is insane to charge that kind of money to replace the MAF sensor. There's an aftermarket MAF sensor from Jet Performance that's probably like 200 bucks. Check em out online

Agreed! I asked the dealer how much just for the MAF part, the guy quoted me 617.65 and told me even if I install it myself I don't have the tools to reprogram the whole system. And gave me a quote of $130 for diagnostic.

So I guess my first hesitation is the extreme price difference between the jet performance ($200) VS OEM Nissan MAF ($620). Whats you guys take on this?

My second is even if I save on the jet performance MAF I would still need to have some diagnostic/ reprogramming of the system, correct?

Uhhhhhh...NO.

MAF $442.01

Install it, idle re-learn, good to go.

BTW why are they saying its burned out? What are the symptoms?

1st thing, RESPECT for the help!

They clam debris got on the MAF and caused it to burnout. As far as the symptoms, I'm not sure of the correct terms so ill just tell you what happen...
This past Friday I decided to feed a little speed to my rid, was going about 90mph on the highway. I came to a light – stopped, and turned to head down the street near my apartment. Once I turned, I felt the wheel of the car tighten up. I pulled to the side of the road to figure out what was going on. I turned the car off and when I tried to turn it back on – the lights on the dash were flickering and the rpm needle was going up and down. The car seemed to be revving and then would just stall. I unplugged the battery and re-connected, same issue. Then I towed it to the dealer, the rest is in the original post up top.

So if I install it myself, the car's computer will relearn? no reprogramming of the system needed?

You shouldnt need to do anything, but an idle re-learn should solve any issues that may pop up. Its a series of timed actions inside the car you can do yourself, just use the search button up top to find it. Ive posted about it many times and done it myself a few times, I just never remember to write down the steps after I do it!

I can't tell you thanks enough! :bowrofl: Ill give it a go, installing the MAF on my own. Do you think the dealer would black list my warranty when I call and tell them give me my car back?

Warranties are touchy. Its been said many times before, search the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act on Google and read up about it. They have to prove whatever caused a warrantied parts failure was caused by an aftermarket part or by a non certified technicians work. I dont think they will give you a problem. If you dont want to risk it, ask them what it would cost for them to install it. Show them the price at Courtesy Parts I linked above, tell them you will give them $10 for the 5 minutes (or less) of labor swapping it out will take, and call it a day.

UPDATE!
DJBeasy advice was on point! Thanks bro!
Purchased the OEM MAF online, installed in the dealers parking lot, and preformed an idle re-learn. Back in business and happy to have my coupe back. :yesnod

One final question though. While preforming the idle re-learn I skipped the final step "idle 25 sec, rev engine a few times" mainly because I was concerned whatever caused my MAF to burnout in the first place could occur again. I've been afraid to fully rev, till I can take apart my intake and give it a good clean.

I'm guessing the reason my MAF burned out in the first place was from when I cleaned my filter...
Could over oiling the filter during the cleaning process be to blame? Also When I cleaned the air filter I stuffed a clean cloth in the pipe to prevent any debris form getting in.

I think the only way that would cause a problem is if the oil actually contacted the MAF. You would have to have A LOT of oil on there for it to soak through and launch into the intake and against the MAF. Possibly too much oil could prevent airflow all together and trip the sensor, but if they told you it was burnt out who knows. These are both very unlikely things.

I would have done the last step. I dont consider this solved until you rev the engine and run it as you would usually without an issue. Driving it timidly to avoid a possible issue is not fixed...
