I was replacing some bushing today and noticed how much rust there is down there. There aren't any holes, but it's nasty. The previous owner had the underbody hit with some type of coating and it's just keeping the rust from falling off.

I took off my exhaust to get my rusty rear sway bar out and was planning on repainting it, but there is rust all over and I don't know if it's worth it.

How have you dealt with a rusty underbody?

I might as well junk the car then. It's surface rust.

Simply, this.

..Or... Scrape whatever you can off with something strong, grind & wire wheel, THEN... "cut and weld."

It's a little bit, but all over. Have any of you used this POR 15?

What I'm really asking is how to take care of it. I could go nuts with my angle grinder, but there are many places I wouldn't be able to hit with it.

i belive thats part of the por-15's purpose. from what i read, its one of the best products. like the rest stated, take a good weekend with a wire wheel and have at it. check out white comets build thread, he has some great pics of his underbody work. if its surface, its not a big deal, but if its rot in a structural place, def cut and weld is nessesary. you might be able to get away with some patches on the floor pans but near the rails and the subframe, forget that.

the angle ginder w/ the wire wheel is obviously for larger areas that are easy to access, the smaller the spot the smaller your tool of choice will have to be.

por-15 is great stuff and can be used over metal thats simply been scraped clean of loose rust, so dont worry about getting the tight spots spotless, just get as much off them as possible and then coat them

i just like getting as much rust off as much area as possible before i start to coat the metal, because obviously the cleaner the metal the less chance of a "recurrence"

out of sight, out of mind. OR if you wanna be proactive about it jack the car up and start goin to town with a wirewheel. if its just surface rust, its no big deal. it will grind off and you can treat it and paint it to your hearts desire.

then 2 years later, you can do it all over again
