Bumper Sensors Activate for No Reason

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Has anyone experienced the sensors on the bumpers going on (beeping) when you're not close to another object? It happened to me a couple of times on a highway exit ramp, but then I figured maybe the exhaust from the truck in the lane next to me somehow set it off.

However, last week it happened about half a dozen times, at various stop signs and traffic lights and while driving, when there were no other vehicles or activity around me. Sometimes it would just beep-beep-beep, other times it was the louder, steadier BEEEEEPPPPP! It was driving me crazy!

Was it raining? Mine did that once when it was raining.

some of us have experienced this, it will happen at low speeds around 6mph or less limit for the sensors to still be active, the best we came up with is a hump in the road or a embedded sensor for the traffic light of a speed signal in the road is interfering and producing a phantom wall so to speak.

hope this helps..

I've had this problem since the car was new. I can depend on it occuring at a couple of specific traffic lights. I complained to the Dealer, but they could find nothing wrong. There is no TSB on it that I could find. The only cause the dealer offered was that there was some kind of traffic monitoring device that was causing the problem. I've looked at other Nissan car forums but no one has reported a similiar problem.Since it doesn't happen all the time, I've resigned myself to live with it, turning off the function switch when it becomes annoying. If you have the Tech Package, you can change the sensitivity. The rest of us have to suffer. Doesn't make me love the car.

I would check to see if any of the sensors might have some slight damage from road debris.

It definitely happens in the rain -- I think when water gets on the front of the sensor, it creates this "phantom" wall.

It also happens sometimes when I'm behind a car with a chrome bumper -- perhaps the sonar is getting reflected directly back into the sensor...again creating a "phantom" wall...

Just some thoughts - turning it off when it gets anoying though is the best option.

I have had my car since Feb08 and driven in a lot of Oregon rain. I don't recall my sensors ever going off outside a parking lot.

It is definately the embedded sensor under the road, it does not happen to me all the time but it gives me warning on same stops, all the time.

I first commented on this in a reply to a previous thread - see "Too Many Beeps" (last post 9/8/2008).I have exactly the same problem when stopped at certain traffic lights. Not every one, but very predictable at certain locations.Does not seem to be anything to do with rain or wet and I also have concluded it has something to do with embedded sensors.Thank heavens the off/on switch is handy so I just switch it off if I'm stuck at a light with an incessant 'beeeeeep' in my ears.

Thanks for the reminder, ecosse! (I had actually gone looking for this, but I guess I didn't go back far enough.)

For those interested in reading the old thread:zer...beeps

Had this happen a few times on my Nissans......dirt, snow, salt, ice, and very rarely rain can cause this.

You know when it loves to start beeping like crazy? Drive thru's. Drive through fast food places, drive-up ATM's, etc. Sooo silly.
