Besides just using touch-up paint on bumper scratches, is their any prep work or other alternative to cover several small scratches on my rear bumper?

My auto detailer friend (20 years experience) taught me that most of the scuffs/marks that look like scrapes are not scrapes but whatever you hit or hit you are residual paint or scuffs that can be easily removed by rubbing out with solvent (paint thinner or mineral solvent) works like a charm.
