Whats up guys so I just got the bully Dog Gt and I still dont understand it very well.

Can someone explain the +4,+3,......-6,7,-8 timing, and what the "idle" does????
Someone said the more negative you are the more torgue you get..... is that right and can someone explain how it works?

THanks!!

timing is in response to how fast the engine is going to attempt to keep up w/ the transmission. i believe the 3.5 cvt had better times w/ +1 degree over the rest, and its not putting a ton more strain on the engine.

the idle is.... ur sitting at idle when ur car is stopped at a red light for instance. the higher idle u have, (technically) the more gas u use up (it SIPS it, its not a huge amount) but u then feasibly have more power at launch. figure instead of 750-780 rpms the car usually has, u can launch at 900 or 1000 rpms ( wouldnt recommend over 980 though for suspension purposes since u haz cvt and not manual) so basically ur giving urself a slight boost, and higher dB audible from ur exhaust. otherwise- slam on the gas as soon as the guy in the riced out civic is next to u and uve got him before his fart can fully opens up lol

dont go over +5 timing. just... dont. lol

and yes- the more tq u get but u slow down the car too. the results into the negs are not as good. puts less strain on engine, but again theres a small window for that. u'll be happy w/ +1 and +150rpm idle :)

yo' notorious d- dub d, out.

That explanation of timing is not correct.

so wait a higher idle gives u a better launch than a lower idle?
i always wondered why u would want to mess with the idle. but yea lower idle sips less gas.

u wont feel the difference since its how the engine works in regards to smoothlyness (yeah i made that word up lol). You'll notice the differences when you download the actual tune of the car going from stock to mid/reg to premium however. But do this in baby steps. I personally do not recommend going right from stock to premium tune. Let the car adjust to different pressures and such. :)

you want my exact answer of timing? <sigh>.

ignition timing sets the engine spark plugs to sync more fluently with the transmission to prevent a typical cause of backfiring which can cause added strain on the engine and transmission in tandem. if you advance timing and adjust your idle speed (together) you can limit the amount of backfire and allow the engine to run more smoothlyer(hahahahaha). and if done correctly- you can prolong the life of the car, but not if ur constantly beating on it lol.

happy? lol

on a side note- i had my coupe at +4 degrees and +150 idle. i also had a 2.5 6spd. for those of u w/ the cvt... i'd be a lil more leniant as to what i set these parameters to.

so setting mine at +1 timing with 0 adjustment on idle doesnt make a difference what so ever i guess lol .. do you adjust the idle according to your adjusted timing? accoring to your +4 time , +150 idle.. so ist safe to say people can tune it +1 time / +37.5 Idle .. +2 time/+75 Idle.. +3 time/+112.5 Idle ? haha im just talking out of my a** right now .. but fill me in on this if you could please. thanks

ignition timing is at what degree (how high the piston is up in the cylinder) the spark plugs fire.... The higher up the piston is the "stronger" the explosion will be that pushes the piston back down. You raise timing too much and you start to get knock and pinging.

My question is does the tuner adjust WOT timing or just base timing?

as mentioned in the 35+ page thread regarding the bd tuner- our cars do NOT have WOT. its base timing.

@devilmagic - you are pretty much on the ball. the bd can only add +50 rpm at a time i think- it was either 50 or 150 i dnt remember since i tuned it almost a year ago lol- but i did the 150+ and the +4deg. and didnt have a problem. but that was also w/ premium no matter what to make the cleanest spark (imo)

See 707's post. That is a correct explanation of timing without going too specific. Everything Dan-who-knows-his-stuff has mentioned in this thread about explaining timing sounds like someone making stuff up based on hearsay.

Ok so if my timing is +4 does that mean that the pistons are high up??? and if there high up what does that do? Whats happens when the timing is low like -8???

If you are at +4 your pistons are closer to TDC (higher up = closer to Top Dead Center) when combustion starts. Being closer to TDC means that the air and fuel in the space are more pressurized and makes for a stronger kaboom (for lack of better terminology lol) Engines are designed such that at the point of combustion optimum power is being created and is able to drive the piston back down. (theres alot more detail in that statement then what i just wrote there) but anyway , when you have a -8 timing means that your piston is lower in the cylinder at combustion. too low and that causes precombustion which is bad for your engine. That means combustion happend before the piston even reaches TDC and therefore the force of the explosion is acting against the upwards movement of the piston causing unnesessary stress.

i know that wasa lot to read lol. ask away if u have more questions

So if the timeing is higher does that it mean I would get more pressure therefore getting more horsepower/torque?

Generally speaking you do get more power from slightly advanced timing... but, that is only generally speaking. You have NO CLUE what effect the BD tuner has on power without doing a dyno pull after changing the timing. By changing the base timing only, you may be making power in some RPM ranges and losing power in other RPM ranges. Additionally, you will have no clue when you have reached the point that you are endangering your engine rather than making power. For all we know, the BD tuner can't even change the timing just like it was supposed to change the rev limiter but really was never able to.
