Finally, it's my time to ask everyone to review my build-up progress - I'm counting on you guys!

Items Purchased:

- Ross Pistons (8:5:1)- Pauter Rods- Ferrea Valves- Ferrea Springs and Retainers- Topline Timing Chain Kit

Machine Shop Service Complete:

- Block fluxed, tanked, bored, decked- Crank checked, polished, balanced - Pistons/Rods assembled, rings installed, balanced

Parts Pending:

- ARP head/main studs- Cometic HG- TOGA Main/Rod Bearings- TOGA Oil Pump.- Topline copper exhaust gasket: what are the 400-500+ hp cars running? Anything copper brings up mismatched expansion rates to mind...- OEM Overhaul gaket set: anyone know where I can find a complete list of the included items? I'd like to know if it comes w/ freeze plugs and thrust washers?

Machine Shop Service Pending:

- Head: valve job, assembly- Balancing: flywheel, clutch- Motor Assembly

Misc Questions:

- Should I balance the rotating mass first then cryotreat or vice versa?- I can have the engine cyrotreated for $400, sound reasonable?- Let me know if you find any gaping holes in my build-up, I'm counting on you guys to help me avoid 90% of the uncalculated nickel/dime spending

TIA,

Jesse

I'm just using regular felpro exhaust gaskets. No big deal.

I dont really understand why you feel like you need to cryotreat all those nice brand new forged parts. Honestly I think its an expense you can do without, but if you must I'd suggest cryotreating before balancing.

The felpro kit comes with pretty much everything you can think of as far as gaskets, but no it does not include freeze plugs or thrust washers. I got both from my machine shop since I had them assemble my lower end. They were free.

Things you might've forgot:

-When you rebuild the head you'll want new valve guides also. They're cheap though

-When you have your lower end balanced, make sure they balance the clutch along with everything else.

-My machine shop actually said that the ARP head/main kit wasnt all that necessary, but ARP rod bolts were. Check those out.

-New water pump?

-Plus of course theres a whole TON of parts that you havnt listed but I assume you know what most of those are since you're building your motor like this. Post your entire list if you want us to look it over but you'll figure stuff out as you go through with this. I dont think I see anything major you're really forgetting about that will cause you problems yet.

Good luck, sounds like the engine is pretty serious! What do you plan on managing it with?

Sounds like a good plan, if cost isnt a problem, i would suggest getting a pulley set from unorthodox racing or at least a lightened crank pulley, and lightened flywheel.

Dont forget about an alternator, i think new from nissan there around 180, yeah i know ouch. I swapped one from a s13 into my s14, works fine. Unless your's works well.

Did you ask about painting the engine? Thats always a nice plus.

I dunno theres not much to say after fiznats post...

Fiznat, I'll be heading your way come May - I'm being stationed in MA (Hanscom AFB), 9 miles from my hometown of Waltham. Might start up a business too

- Valve guides, I'll order them, PM me a part number if you could, thanks! - I've heard of OEM HGs holding super well, that's why I was thinking OEM gasket set. I decided to go w/ the Cometic HG though, so Felpro is an option if the quality is proven on 400-500hp cars.- I've heard very good things about the OEM head/main studs but, like everything else, I'm going to overbuild it from the start.- I've got a new water pump- Fiznat, if you've compiled a complete list for the engine build, could you PM or email it to me? I'm using all the existing turbo, fuel, ign, ECU mgmt for the time being, just need to make sure the all the angles are covered for the engine build.

Naro, I already have a UR Pulley set and Fidanza flywheel on my existing setup. That stuff will transfer over. I have 3 KAs to pick parts from, so stuff like alternators is too easy...

Thanks guys!

Exhaust Manifold Gasket - Need to find out what the 400-500hp guys are running.

Regarding New England, is 240SXONE the main site to hit? Any other state/region sites you know of? I look forward to the list, thanks!

I would not recommend reusing things like alternators from old KAs. I did it, I had (ironically) 3 used ones at my disposal. One wouldn't charge thew battery, the second was dead, and the third would spike the voltage to 20 depending on RPMs, and make my Optima RedTop sweat (those batteries are bulletproof, so if it does something odd you are REALLY doing things wrong). 3 painful alternator swaps later, I just got a reman from a PepBoys or AutoZone, theirs is waranteed for life. Same goes for ignition coils (easier to replace though) and water pumps, and pretty much anything that it hard to check the condition of unless it's on the car.

Hey, Waltham! I just noticed that! I used to work out of waltham fairly often-- for Armstrong Ambulance. I was an EMT for them in Waltham/Brighton/Boston etc.

As far as exhaust mani gasket, like I said I am just using the felpro one that came in the complete engine kit... and I'll definetly be in that horsepower range you mentioned.

240sxOne is pretty cool- I dont go there all that often but it is the only Northeast 240-specific forum that I'm aware of. I'll be getting more involved over there as it starts to get warmer and they begin to think about having meeets etc.
