gniknave wrote:I need to do this on the super cheap. I already have a tower, plenty of fans, 2 DVDRW's and power supply.

What I need to know:

How can I get the motherboard, cpu, video card, sound card (if it's not built in the motherboard), memory, hard drive, and operating system disk on the cheap?

I don't need this pc to do anything special. I just want it to at the very least perform like my laptop.

My laptop has an AMD Turion 64 X2 [1.6 ghz, 256kb +256kb L2 cache, up to 1600mhz system bus] 1024 system memory, 100gb (5400rpm) hard drive

I'm happy with how the laptop performs, and I don't need the PC to do anything more. My PC will be mainly for casual use to keep people from coming over my apartment and using my laptop to get on the internet, I'd like to limit how much I use the laptop.

Any help is appreciated, but please speak in plain English, I'm not an expert.
Truthfully i think that your goals are not relalistic within your budget. The motherboard, CPU, and memory will already run your budget dry and that's not even with quality parts. Your best bet, buy a used rig.....it'll already have everything you need and you may be able to find one within your budget. Also, it's not just about the amount of RAM or how fast this or that is, you have to research the specs on the parts and see what works best with what part and what rating. Sounds like you're just building a new comp just to have another. At this point, if you don't need it, save your money and wait.

I think logoung has just given you the best advice. Others may disagree. But I can state from my own experience he/she is pretty much right on.

Building your own today costs mucho bucks. Those of us that do that are looking for extra performance and are willing to pay for the latest in boards, dual processers, etc., etc.

Get a good used machine. Hope you have the software to load because if you don't its not cheap. Using software that has already been loaded on another machine, with today's pirating laws, etc. can find you with a dead machine even if you get all the hardware, CMOS, etc. to work.

Listen to this guy........I know he is right. You just can't get what you want for the price you want to pay.

You know.......you may be right. But operating systems are just operating systems. Some need more HP to run than others, but I have no desire to go back to DOS. If you can tell me what DOS stands for as Bill Gates stated it when he built if for IBM.............I will give you much more Kudos.

im not going to google this one, but i dont really Remember, it was something like "disk operating system"For 300 you can purchase a whole computer with a LCD monitor. Just put XP or windows 2000 on it and youd be fine

I stand corrected on the pricing. I will have to look at that site more closely.

KUDOS are in order. But I can only give you 98% out of %100. It was originally called "dirty" operating system, but it was full of flaws. Name was later changed to just Operating System and then to "Disk".

You still get an A+ in computer history. KUDOS to you.

Another vote for newegg; I've bought tons of stuff from them. Low prices and great service. You could spend a week getting the lowest prices from everywhere and save yourself $100, but isn't your time worth more than that?

Yes. I think so. I have the time and I'm in the mood to build another.

My Dell 8100 seems to be getting a little tired. But it has done well over the last several years I have had it. However, that was with upgraded memory, second and larger hard drive installed. YES>> I am ready to build another one.

Thanks for getting me motivated!!!

hmmm, I disagree about some post about TigerDirect.com. I purchase from the actual company. Whom TigerDirect is one of their names and ive never had issues like that. And ive probably bought more products than you guys combined.

Oh well, to each his own opinion.

Another vote for Newegg. Good customer service, good return policy. And for a budget build get one of the new Intel Celerons. (basically a Core 2 solo) For the price they are quite speedy. (And very overclockable if you are into that sort of thing.)

If he was building a high-end rig I would totally agree, but for a budget rig the differences are pretty small.

I say purchase a rig from best buy or something. For like $400 you can get a full computer with a 17~19" LCD monitor. Format it and put Windows XP or even Windows 98SE on it and you'll be set.

Please......lets not lead this guy down the yellow brick road.

YOU CAN'T BUILD WHAT HE WANTS FOR THE MONEY HE WANTS TO SPEND!!!

Prove me wrong and I will buy your $200-300 machine, do some bench testing on it for clock speed............blah, blah. If it doesn't cut it you will give me 10-1 odds back on the purchase price?

Don't forget I get a flat screen monitor too.

at the moment intel fails on all levels right now IMO

as for the question at hand yes. for what u want there is no building it for under like 800 bux and thats pushing it. u would be better off buying used of like craigslist or something.

In both comparisons the Intel processor you listed will either meet or even slaughter the Amd. Anybody who says different is simply a fanboy not willing to face reality. If you don't believe me I will be happy to compare benchmark scores.

For those who aren't computer geeks, we just offered to race for pinks

i did that for several customers that wanted a cheap basic web server, loaded Linux or FreeBSD on there and forget about it, except of course patches and updates. not with a winblowz box, you have to reboot the damn thing every month to free up the memory leak.

In both those cases, the Intel chips you linked are superior. Far superior.

Also, no K8 chip is "high end" anymore.

k8 is yesterday's news. look forward to more like the high-end AMD K11, "Bulldozer"

Ouch, my grandfather buys from chipco, your wasing your money man! I used to compare prices and mine were always cheeper. Only upside to Chipco IMO is getting it same day or next day for cheap.

Same system specs but with XP, I normally sell them between $180 and $200. Ive gotten a lot of them, IBMs specs like that for around $130 my cost.

i guess it depends on who you know at chipco mate in your defense chipco does not have the best price all the time. i use multiple distributors for pricing now though. thanks for the insight

Hmmm... lets see...Processor $125 Pentium Core 2 duo 2.53 ghzhttp://shop4.frys.com/product/...LT_PGMother Board $50 - ECS G33t(this has integrated video and audio, you could ditch the video card)http://shop4.frys.com/product/...LT_PGMemory $40 - 2GB DDR2 800mhzhttp://shop4.frys.com/product/...LT_PGHard Drive $60 - WD 160 GB SATAhttp://shop4.frys.com/product/...LT_PGVideo $20 (After rebate, $50 before) EVGA 7200GS 128MB PCI-Express http://shop4.frys.com/product/...LT_PGOperating System $0 (Linix is a free download, takes some getting used to but works)http://www.ubuntu.com/

Total after rebate with video card $295 +SH (maybe tax)

Total less video card $275, $300 shipped

I think that will work, lol
