im not going to lie, i like american musle but gas prices have determined that i garage my firebird and find a 4 cillander. as a mucsle enthusiast when looking for a car i want rear weel drive, manual trans, and a coup. i found a 1989 240sx with a swap for the DOHC 2.4. (first mistake: when working with old V8s a problem with fuel dilivery can be ignored for some time without major problems. this is very untrue when working with fuel injection. in other words a leaky injector lead to rings and bearing frying in the #3 cillander.) not wanting to salvage a block that probably needs much boaring to compinsate for the scars. i decided to try and get a new moter from Garage 112, why them beacause they sold me the car two weeks earlier. the owner was reluctant but ended up giving me a long block that suposivly ran. but with parts missing, no oil pan, and a hole in the valve cover i decided that this moter was nothing more than a buildable block and head. some may be wondering why not just buy a crate engine? well not all of us are gifted enough to have mommy and daddy fund our projects. so what im stuck with is a 240 with a blown moter a block and head to build. so since im not looking for gobs of power and i need to get decent gas milage. i dont want to boost the moter maybee because im stuck on american mucsle. i planed on 11:1 je pistons, port and polishing heads. not sure weather or not larger valves would worth bang for buck. besides that the usuall: headers, large throtle body, and ram intake, maybee a cam it could use more durration. i would use larger injectors but gas millage is a factor and yes i know with that compreshion ratio high octain will be nessasary and that doesnt say much for saving gas but im stuborn. any other thoughts or tips on power without boost.

I feel your situation about not having mom and pops fund your fun.

Look into ITB's. If you're looking for more stuff about building NA power on a KA, I would actually suggest looking into a SOHC, and browsing through the Nissan Motorsports catalog. Parts for building an NA engine are prohibitively expensive though, and if you're looking to save gas, the cost of the build will overshadow any potential savings from running without forced induction.

You'll never see the HP or TQ potential out of an all motor NA KA24E (or DE for that matter) that you would from a V8 w/ just exhaust. YOu might get 300HP out of a seriously built KA but your gas mileage will go out the window. for the price of it all just do an engine swap, the options are countless. Specify what your goals are powerwise, what you would like the car to do (do you want to autox, drift, drag?), and what kind of a budget you want to stay within.

You can still go with a turbo setup on your KA and have better gas mileage you have with your Firebird. Bottom line is that the KA is a truck engine and in NA form you won't see major power gains no matter how much you build it up. If gas mileage and high power is your goal save the money you would have spent on the NA build up and get either an RB20DET or and SR20DET, you'll have a turbo block and more power out of the box than you will with an NA full buildup.

ill throw in my 2 cents, good gas mileage, good power, most efficient is a turbo car but you like v-8 stuff so hear is something more v-8, thomas knight has a kit to add a frontier supercharger to a ka motor. then you arent turbo, your like the mustang guys or big v-8 guys that supercharge everything. you will have the efficiency, good power, gas mileage, etc... you wont be able to build a na ka motor with anywhere near the hp, gas mileage, etc... as this. na motor to get hp, raise red line (computer tune), get cams with alot of overlap, big big valves, ported and polished everything, metal head gasket, arp bolts, studs, custom intake, custom exhaust, race gas, big injectors, maybe you can get 250hp, maybe.

either go turbo, or go super charge, you cannot beat the bang for the buck,

What you want to do with an all motor NA will make your ride very unstreetable and the MPG will go down the toilet.

When 90% of the 240SX public goes for high HP by using turbo charging, that sends a strong message about the best path to higher HP.

Hmmmm. Maybe I am misunderstanding, OR maybe I actually read the post. He is not looking for gobs of power. Not everyone is (dare I say) down with turbocharging! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO the Martians are coming!!!!!!!.

Look bro, I built the SR20 in my Sentra to just over 180hp to the wheels. Over 30mpg and loped like my Bronco. For those that dont know, N/A is about efficiency. Its about details, and fine tuning of EVERYTHING about the car. That is why not many people "get it". Go with a good comprehensive rebuild. Get you some Clevites, a lightweight pulley from Ebay, and look into lightening the valve train. Get some specs on a cam, and save up some scratch for a better induction system. Dont expect crazy power (maybe 160-170 whp) but over 20mpg, and ease of maintenace.

Yes, the simplicity of an NA setup not to mention the not having to wait for boost, etc can make an NA car oodles and oodles of fun to drive. Check out the Nissan Motorsports KA24E. I can assure you that will knock your socks off.
