So I've finally tore down my motor and plan to take it to the machine shop tomorrow..So I'm looking for suggestions/corrections as to what I have planned so far...

-Bore it about .20 over(wondering if I can go more if I run a turbo)-shot-peen the rods...-What all will need to be tuned/etc on the car.

any other info is appreciated..and this is all that comes to mind. But basically I was just wondering what all is absolutely necessary for the set-up because it's going to be a fully built motor.

Thanks

If you say it is going to be a "fully" built motor, you might want to consider getting some aftermarket forged connecting rods. Maybe some Clevite bearings etc

Personally I didnt know that TOGA makes bearings, But TOGA is good stuff, so maybe they would be just up there with Clevite...sorry, I dont have any first hand info...

Just throwing this out there, but maybe you could try to get some directly from a local machine shop?

What about bore specs?? could I go 30 over or just stay 20 over? also...if I polish and shot peen the ka rods, will they work just as good because that's meant to strengthen them a good amount..and does anyone have specs/blueprints/etc that could be useful.

Also...if I have the head machined and what not...will the timing chain still fit properly or will there be play in it?

i have seen ka-e's bored to 50 over but if you are doing that you need to have you block inspected very carefuly. i would also recomend pauter rods (crower are just as good) and a set of wiseco pistons. if your rebuilding you might as well put in the good parts now rather then pull your engine again to put them in later.

Alright cause right now my dad and the machinist are saying that the KA rods will hold up fine if they are polished/shot peened so, wasn't too sure. and if I bore it 30 or more...can I still run a turbo(been told you can't)

What does boring it over have to do with running a turbo? All you doing is increasing the cc's of the motor.

If you are running crazy boost, the sidewalls could become so thin that they will crack.

Shot peening the rods will increase their tensile/compression strength considerably, but they will also become brittle. If it is tuned well and there is no detonation they can hold there own, but I would personally go ahead and pay the extra $200-$300 for forged rods. There is really no reason to go more than .20 over with the bore unless you plan to go all out with your build and you are trying to get the maximum amount of power from your motor...ie...scratching for that extra 2-3 hp. A decent street head port and polish will give you a lot more than an extra .05 cui of displacement.

I have never had any problems or heard any complanints with clevite, but it just comes down to what you want.

Most forged pistons require a .20 bore to fit. Personally I think there is no need to go any more. Also, the OEM KA rods supposedly are shotpeened from the factory, and have been good to around 350whp. Personally If you plan on any more than 300whp, then I would swap for forged Rods.

I dont believe that shot-peening the rods a 2nd time (the are shotpeened at the factory) is really worth the money for the minimal gains you get. Per my machine shop (who I trust the experience of), and a number of articles Ive read, the major benefit you get from shotpeening comes when you perform the procedure for the first time. After that, simply re-shotpeening the part a 2nd time really doesnt help all that much.

If you are building an engine for any significant amount of boost, suck it up and get rods. I made that mistake and trust me, its NOT worth it.
