hello all..im not sure where i needed to post this, but im in need of some help to build a a very powerful KA24DET....the motor will be going a 240Z.right now i have a 280Z with a 280ZX turbo motor, thats pretty well fixed up, CCW wheels, T04E turbo, Blitz parts, full road race suspension, etc etc.so please dont take what im asking about this KA setup lightly.. im DEAD serious about doing this to a Datsun..i want as much HP as i can get from a built up KA.i want atleast a mid 10 in the 1/4th, great handling (i can handle those things :))......why im picking the KA is because bigger is better and the SR20 just isnt for me... plus its been done and the KA hasnt been put in a Z yet...anyways i dont wanna spend THAT much but i do want the power so spending alot isnt that big of a issue.anyways the thing is i wanna run atleast 500rwhp on 93 pump gas, and atleast 650+rwhp on race gas and higher boost.now ill even spray, but then i would like more HP on pump gas, but i know thats not the case sometimes.so anyways what would be a GREAT setup for those goals?and im sorry if this sounds stupid, but i am 4real.also if theres a link that already talks about all this please let me know so i dont waste anybodys time....thanks !

Money no object...T66 ball bearing turbo on an equal length mani, 96# hr. or 1000cc injectors with standalone fuel management and all the supporting hardware (fuel pump, rail, intercooler, exhaust etc.)

Money considered...nice free flowing log style manifold with T3/T04R perhaps (it's a new turbo to me I just stumbled across, I worry that the compressor and turbine aren't well matched though) or Maybe a straight T04S. Go with the 96# injectors and an ecu retune by JWT (they've been talking about doing a program for those injectors). That might save you a little, but no matter what, 500whp on pump gas is going to cost you a pretty penny.

Edit: dunce me forgot internals, I'd go with Pauter rods, they are QUALITY and very sturdy (I believe rated at 1000hp in the KA  ) and probably Ross pistons as they are very well made and are made of very 2618 aluminum instead of 4032. What I've reasearched points towards 2618 being ultimately stronger because of the little to no silicon content, of course because of this they expand a bit more. I would do nothing to the crank except get it chamfered and micro-polished, it's plenty strong as it is. I'd also be tempted to cryo treat the crank and block depending on how much money you have and how long you want to wait. I'd probably also swain tech the pistons and maybe combustion chambers, manifold, and turbine.

Well then, if I had unlimited money I would do the following.

[Engine]forged and coated pistonsstrenghtened crankport/polish intake/exhaust manifoldsbore cylinders strengthened bottom endforged rodscryo treat all engine parts mentioned above as well as the block

[Turbo]T88 or T76 TurboHuge Front mount intercoolerAquamist or NOS FMIC cooler

[Fuel]Upgraded Fuel pump (Walbro?)850CC Injectors (nismo)Upgraded Ignition system (MSD?,HKS)

[Electronics]Tuned ECUBoost Controller

[NOS]Maybe a 50 to 100 shot wet setup

This would be a huge power setup, runs at least 20PSI on the turbo. I wouldn't know the estimated HP but I'd say 500 on a built motor would be easy. Unfornately no one has been brave enough to do that to a KA, maybe because the block has its limits. You'll make big power, but huge lag.

Also every suspension part/transmission part will need to be upgraded to handle all this power. If given the stock parts, I'm sure the motor will shred the tires off the rims or probably grind the transmission to bits. A heavy duty race clutch is highly recommended.

The cost of all this would most likely exceed $15,000 - $20,000

If you plan on any drag style launches with slicks I have a feeling you'll destroy the transmission quickly too, I dont really have a solution for that other than frankensteining a 300zx transmission to work. I dont think you'll find the blocks limit, only the limit of the tuner if it's standalone. If something breaks, it'll be because of detonation. I did also forget a full port and polish with a good set of more radical cams as well.

Probably needs something custom made from Jun and the likes. This would be nice if he actually makes a built KA that makes ridiculous power. He could be in all the magazines and have ricers calling him all day long.

Thanks guys..well its not a Unlimited budget.. But you know what i mean...anyways i dont want HUGH LAGthe car needs to be steetable but anyways is there a stroker kit or anything like that for the KA?ill be using a Motec or something like that to run fuel, ignition and etc.I was thinking of a a T51R turbo, but not 100% sure at all.prob a custom FMIC, as the FMIC i have on my 280Z barely fits, and its 27x12x3 core size... and like 31in's from end tank to end tank... so ill more then likely just go custom, like a 24x24x4 core size with custom end tanks.it will deff be all built with forged pistons and etc.. not sure what brand.. or really anything yet...keep the ideas coming.. thnaks guys.

lol wont be in any mags.. just my car ill drive everyday.i really wanna run 10's on a street tire.. like drag radials..im not a fan of slicks or ET streets.its gonna be a all around car, handling and etc.. its gonna be my next big project after this Z i have now is some what daily driveable.i was thinking of a custom adapter to run some type of GM manual transmission... the Silvia trannys wont work will they? say a S15 6-speed built to handle the power.

motor mounts and etc will be custom, and all that will be thought out later on.what i really would like to do is have the FMIC and etc all inside the engine bay lik the Signal auto silvias... yumm!

Stroking the KA is kinda a bad idea, it allready has a good bit longer stroke than the diameter of its bore :( I bet a T51R would work as well, I just forgot about it. Truth be told I dont know a whole lot about the HIGH powered turbo's. The S15 6 speed wont be strong enough imo for drag style launches, that seems to be what REALLY kills the trannys. Heck, I'd probably keep the KA one on there so we can all see how they handle +500hp just as a matter of curiosity. A T56 should hold the power too if you had a custom bellhousing made for it.

As for lag, all you can really do to keep it down is to use a full ball bearing turbo and concentrate on keeping the exhaust gasses as hot as possible between the combustion chamber and the turbo...hence the swain tech coated combustion chambers, exhaust manifold and turbine. I'd also use an equal length mani if spool is really a concern to you.

fast spooling is important to me..i was thinking about a electronic dump valve...custom intake manifold and a larger T-body.

does anybody no the most HP a KA has put out so far?thanks

540 something or higher I think...i forgot about the intake mani side of things, there aren't many off the shelf upgrades so it would have to be custom to utilize a larger TB.

well the stock 60mm wont do it... i was thinking of a custom intake manifold usint a Webber 70mm or larger T-body.

sounds to me that you want too much, a streetable KA 240 that runs 10s on street tires, and spools quickly, and handles well. although i wish you the best of luck as i for one would love to see this done. if you dont mind me asking exactly what IS your budget? NICE 280z by the way.

there really is no budget, as this will be a on going project.. just like my Z i have now..ive spent over 20 grand in 6 months on my Z when i was only gonna spend maybe 6 grand...so its just gonna be a on going project... if i dont have the money for the turbo this week, ill save up and get it next week or in 2 weeks.. get what i mean?

Any car that run's faster than 12's in my mind is not streetable....

Besides that, the car is too light, you'll be running into serious traction issues...

If you're going to pipe dream, you might aswell dream about ferrari's....

I'll have to agree with marcus.

You have to make compromises somewhere. Breaking into the 10s also involves some skill on the part of the driver. Giant turbos aren't known for spooling. You'll have to augment whatever you have with a good whack of nitrous. You'll also want a new strengthened gearset if you're using a Nissan transmission, and with a multiplate clutch (about 3x more than a normal clutch) if you want it to be streetable at all. Some tube-framing and extreme weight reduction might be involved if you're THAT serious about breaking into the 10s. But that usually compromises structural stiffness to the point where you can't handle too well.

what about the potatoe turbo??? that thing was/is cool. Theres something like a better designed turbine that spools it up quicker and slows back down faster...i dont know alot about turbos(dont like anything that lags) my plan will be fully built KA-SC!! Good luck with the Z car man, i love those...

To run solid 10's with street tires in a 2200lb car like the Z you'll need around 400whp. This can be done on a KA just by upgrading the pistons. I'm thinking a JWT 72lb program and a GT3540 will get you there.

BTW that's the one of the sickest colors on a Z car i've seen. What do they call that green?
