buh-bye transmission

my reverse quit on me last night... worked all day fine, came out of my last class at around 8:15 at night, switched it into reverse, and it acts like it is in nuetral, this is an automatic by the way.

my car has almost 160K on it now, its a 95...incase any of you guys own a auto 240, ill see if i can explain what it felt like before this happened. in the mornings the transmission acted real funny, it wouldnt downshift easily, then when i put down the gas more to get it shift, it would go down into first (if i wasnt going to fast) and rev way up...then when i try to brake it also wouldnt downshift and i had trouble braking normally. when the car was warmed up, it would hang on gears a little as it shifted up if i wasnt at WOT. and it hesitated to downshift a little.

my forward gears still work, a friend of mine took out the dipstick for the transmission and smelled it, told me my transmission was burnt and the forward gears are soon to go. i smelled it, it smelled something like hot rubber. (the dip stick was behind the intake manifold...took me forever to find)

anyway, i am kinda wondering now what i should do...i mean if i can get another auto transmission for cheap i might as well do that. but, if i can make it a 5 speed for not to much more, i plan on doing that. any opinions? thanks.

with 160K you've exceeded the life of the transmission. it's probably stuck in 3rd gear, that's fail safe mode for infiniti's so i'm sure it's similar for the 240. you can try a few things to maybe get it back and working for a while but you are just prolonging the inevitable. should just get it fixed or worse...get a new 240 if your car is in bad shape all together.

maybe if my uncle was money bags i would buy a new 240, but none that i am interested in are less than 10.

i am a full time college student...i work, but i am pretty much broke full time too =)

my only options are getting a replacement auto transmission of some sort, or making a manual...i pretty much cant afford either one, just like everything else, so im screwed...now where did i put that purple mountain bike??

and i have to get the emissions done on it too, ugh!

I saw a dutch auction on ebay for KA24DE 5 speed trannys the other day. they were going for 150 each, might want to check it out. . .

Ugh, I hear ya on that one. You can swap the motor out w/ a new KA, or just get a SR/CA. Would cost a lot less than a new car, and you'd have an almost brand new engine.

150 is very cheap. i bet they are screwed up transmission's for that cheap. i wanna do a 5speed swap so f'in bad. but its a big hassle. i'll wait a while when i take a road trip to afterdark-tuning and get a new, built, NA KA24. since they are takin the motor out anyway for that, might as well get a 5speed while they're at it
