I would like to know what product works best to remove contaminants and bugs and tar from the paint prior to waxing. I have a black Rogue and was told not to use a clay bar as it could damage the paint. Also anyone get an acid wash done and does this harm the paint at all?

I think a clay bar should be fine even for a black Rogue. I would ask this question in the car detailing forum and see what they have to say:

Clay bar is a nice thing but it doesn't remove tough stains like bird droppings. So before clay bar I recommend to use Scratch X 2.0 from Meguiar's on tough stains that didn't come out from car wash. But after clay bar your car will make no sound and feel like baby skin :)

Okay thanks, I just bought Turtle Wax bug and tar remover hope it works. If not I will try the Meguiar's.

WD 40 works on anything from tar to bugs to sticker glue. I have been using it on my cars prior to washing for 30 years. Does not damage paint, glass or chrome. I even use it to remove the wax from my surfboards, so I can also verify that it does not harm fiberglass. It leaves a greasy film so wash the area with soap and water after application. Try it, you will find a lot of uses for it in the house and garage besides the intended use.
