Budget RB30DET Build, Turbo Question!!?

V8 240sx? Sure! If either the chassis OR the engine is non-Nissan (i.e. SR20 in an RX-7 or LS1 in a 240sx), we've done it.

Hey,

I have an R32 RB20DET (Nissan motor 16v Ceramic jobie) & a R32 GTR (Garrett A/R42) laying around and want some input as to weather either is a fessable turbo to use an a cheap RB30 build??

Ive heard of turbo's being rebuilt with larger wheels & porting etc.. And as both would need a rebuild anywho, perhaps rebuilding the GTR/RB20 turbo with new internals would be the best route??

The engines being built for mad skids so taking the cheep-ish route to start with... See where it goes... Oh & its going into an S14

Cheers for your input

If you were planning on using the RB20 head it wont fit without a lot of machining.

To answer your turbo question, if you're going to spend the money for new housings and turbines and such, can't you just buy a new one?? It's much cheaper.

whats your HP goal? 400+ i would say find yourself a Holset HX35 off a dodge ram cummins deisel engine.the newer ones can be had cheap with Variable Vain turbine technology so you can get your lowend spool and top end power.

for an rb30DET you cannot use the rb20 bottom end. You're going to need to source an RB30 bottom end which would need to be imported from Austrailia. they are super cheap there but due to importing and a large markup, it's not cheap.
Also, it would be cheaper to get a RB26 head and make it work vs getting an RB20 head to work (not even sure it is possible, i've heard it is but haven't seen any that have actually been built).
as far as a turbo, like TJCars2 said, it'd be cheaper to buy a better one than get yours rebuilt.
Also, the GTR turbos are smaller than the stock rb20 turbo. If you're thinking about using rb26 twin turbos on an RB30, you would need to source both stock twins from an rb26 because the rb20 is a completely different turbo.
Either way, there is no "cheap" way of building an RB30DET. Your best bet is going some other route.
Don't mean to burst your bubble, but it's just the way it is.
