I am working on a RB25det and the head had a few broken exausht studs. well i drilled them all and used a bit extractor to remove them.

this was fine till i brok the extractor on the last stud.

So now i'm stuck with a broken stud extractor in a stud broken off in the head. and i CAN"T drill the Fu(king thing out. all the bit do is make the broken extractor end shinny and dull the bits i buy.

I need help here. any sudgestions besides bringing the head to the machine shop. i don't want to remove the head and have to source and pay ofr a gasket.

thanks for the help

A good titanium or carbide drill bit will take care of the extractor. Remember when drilling hard metals like easy outs go slow (medium low power)with the drill. If you give it too much drilling speed the extractor will get hot and once that happens it will be much harder to remove. HTH

yup, when drilling metal, at all...use a variable speed drill and turn down the rpm, your drill bit will thank you for that.

i know it's a PITA to have a broken head stud; good luck !

LOL.

Take that thing to a professional before you hurt something. Possibly yourself. If you can't get it out with any of the things you've tried.. it's time to have a pro do it. Just some advice..

weld a bolt into the hole in the broken stud and grab hold of that. Taking it to a head/machine shop would be the best thing. If they screw it up they owe you, if you screw it up you`re SOL

I did that with mine also. I ended up getting a bit for the dremmel that grinds down metal. I used it to grind the ez-out and ended up just drilling the rest of the bolt out with a titanium bit.

get some threading oil and a hand bolt extractor, do it by hand cuz you can tell MUCH better what that POS extractor is gonna snap. let that oil soak in REAL good.if that doesnt work, then get a carbide tipped drift punch and chip it out. take your time with the bolt. it will break the bolt into small chunks, dont worry about it , just be careful not to damage the threads, blow out your hole and keep going till the bolt is gone.if you **** up your threads you can always drill out the hole and retap the hole a different size, make sure you use some good tapping oil, cast iron is self lubricating also...

sorry 1 more thing, dont use anymore titanium/carbide drill bits, chances are all the bits you dulled on that extractor/bolt just made the metal Harder and tougher, and you'll end up burning those expensive drill bits....lemme know how it goes... i know a couple more tricks if those dont work..
