Broken Speed Sender?? or retarded gauge...

ok, i just bought a 1990 240sx, and sometimes when im driving the speedometer willl just go crazy, or just sit on 0. when its doing it, the cruise control wont work, and i have no power past 4000 rpms, like the fuel cuts out. please help me!!

hey, welcome to NICO. step #1 to diagnosing any car problem is to search first, then ask questions. if you have already searched, make sure you bring that to attention so people won't get upset :)

try checking the computer connections on the transmission

thanks, i did search, im coming here from honda-tech, so i learned that lesson well. can you point me in the direction of where exactly the speed sensor thing is on the transmission?? like the top or bottom?? and how to get to it. thanks.

get on your back and crawl under your car. you should see 3 or 4 plugs going into the sides of the transmission, near the bottom. make sure they're all plugged in nice and tight.

if that doesn't fix it, it might be a loose wire somewhere else.

have you replaced your plug wires? i had 3 of mine cracked along the boot, so it cut out when the engine revved. path of least resistance. wrap them with electric tape, if it fixes it, you found the cut out. as for the speedo, if it is an occasional problem, check the connections and squirt in dielectric grease to keep dust away.

the plug wires are brand new, and it only loses power when the speedometer is being wierd, like it thinks it going to fast so it cuts the fuel. i checked all the connections, and they all seemed to be fine, hopefully it wont do it anymore.

i swapped the engine, transmission and went to a HUD setup... sorry.
