I was driving around and noticed at lower RPM's a pinging noise coming from the engine bay. after a bit of driving i noticed that it was not going away and narrowed it down to the drivers side front. When i got home i popped the hood to find my CAI was broken. The part broken was the little foam/plastic disk between the MAF and air filter. i just took it out and hooked everything back up and took the car for a drive. everything seemed to be fine. i belive the piece is to help from sucking in water, but i was wondering if it was ok to drive with it out.

You are 100% correct. That piece is to prevent water from making it all the way into your intake manifold. It is perfectly fine to drive without it as long as you don't encounter water (rain, puddles, flooding etc). You should be able to find a new one for relatively cheap, I would suggest getting one and putting it on as soon as possible just in case.

**edit**

Almost forgot, piece is called a bypass valve. So when looking for one search for water bypass valve, intake bypass valve etc. Or if you are lucky someone will post a link of one up here for ya.

Places that carry AEM intakes should probably be able to get them for you. If you can't find one locally you can get one online from Stillen.
