Well, my son came home last night and said he was hearing a noise from one of the drivers side wheels, which this A.M. I ascertained was a broken lug nut stud on the rear wheel which was rattling inside the BBS center cover. (It only rattled at lower speeds because when he was going faster, it was held still by the centripetal force)

So now I have to replace a broken lug. Any advice before I tear into the service manual??

I think this happened because we improperly tightened the lugs with a new torque wrence, instead of my old feel_by_hand method. I must have had the wrench set too low or else forgot to finish off the two nuts next to the broken one, (which were loose).

Oooh, that's a bad one. I don't know if you can remove the stud without separating the hub from the bearing. According to the manual, the bearing needs to be replaced once it's separated and shouldn't be reused. I've removed the hub/knuckle/bearing assembly, but I've never separated the bearing yet. They cost over $200 if I remember right.

does he have spacers?

The fsm doesn't tell you this but, it can be done!

hammer out the old hub bolt

insert new hub bolt and place something like two wrenches (the closed-end part)just for space put a lug on and get some one to hold the wrenches and gradaully tighted the lug you may have to repeat this process a couple times and you might mated the wrenches together but i 'll tell you it is alot easier than taking the hub off and i think if you take the hub off you have to replace a seal so....

just keep at it you will know when it is in there all the way and double and triple check it.

You can replace the stud without pulling the hub apart. If you don't have access to many tools, Gators advice sounds good!

If you use an air hammer, the studs will come off like butter. Just spray them with some penetrating fluid.

I just receeved the replacement lug-studs from Scottsdale, and now I think I understand Gartors advice. The lug has a circular head, and a region just below the head before the threads begin which it "fluted" or grooved, in the direction of the long axis of the bolt.

If I get it right, Gator is suggesting that if you hammer the broken stub out, you can then insert the new stud from behind, and using a combination of a lug nut, a wrench and a "Spacer" to pull against, "pull" the stud into position and get it seated properly. I think I'll try that one.

The only issue seem to me to be whether I can get the new one started through the hub without removing it--"clearance" issue. We'll see soon.

Thanks
