broken cam

i'm not sure if this went through. 2nd attemptI recently snaped the cam in my sohc engine right in half. i have never seen this failure before and was wondering if anyone else had come across this problem or knowns why this might have happened.i was hopping that someone will tell me that when itv snaped it probably didn't do much damage because the valves in the (now) non-rotating section have evened themselves out and are not hammering the top of the pistons.advise.

UPDATE .... I'VE PULL THE CAM AND ROCKERS OFF AND THE PERCHES ARE ALL SCORED. I'LL BE REPLACING THE HEAD.
