Guys,

The left side of my ashtray is broken somehow. Basically there is a spring and it looks like a pivot spot that the spring is wrapped around. Looks like there is a screw that goes into the pivot spot, but I'm not sure. If that's all it needs, can someone let me know how to get in there. I looked today, but couldn't really see anyway to get at the side of the ashtray.

Thanks

Derck

You have to take the console apart, to get to the ashtray. It is more like a pin, than a screw.

Kewl,

Jeff thanks for the diagrams...I'll have to save them. I'm sure they'll come in handy later. Also, do you know if the pin is something I can buy or do I have to get the whole assembly?

Thanks a bunch

Derck

Jeff - I'll have to try that.

Mine's been broken since I bought it (nearly 3 years now) and I've watched to simply buy a replacement from a car being parted out. But I want the ashtray and shifter surround to maintain the woodgrain. Unfortunately, they 2 pieces usually go for >$100 and it's just not worth it for me, since I don't use the ashtray.

Here's a link to a photo step x step direction page. Should be the same for your year too.

If I remember correctly I used a very shallow wide-head sheet metal screw into that pivot to fix mine...

The link posted by Q451990 is the more direct approach. (http://carstereohelp.com/stere...o.htm)

Getting the ashtray out should take no longer than 5-10 minutes... no need to take off steering wheel, glove box etc.

Incidentally... I had the same problem. I think I fixed it with JB weld and a screw of some sort and may have even hack-sawed the head off the screw once in place (can't remember for sure) but JB Weld was definately involved.

Thanks again guys...man, wealth of info here. I'll take it apart tonight and see what I can see. Jeff, you don't happen to remember what size cotter pin you got to slide in there do ya?

Anyone fixed their ashtray? Mine's broke too and I'm getting tired of having to work at opening/closing it yet too cheap/broke to buy a new one.

Stuck a sheet metal screw in mine aswell. The opening on the ashtray is slightly smaller in diameter than the arm it pivots on, so a sheet metal screw that can is just the right size to fasten into the ashtray's hole for the pin will be thin enough to allow the ashtray to pivot open and close perfectly smoothly.

Sorry for the terrible sentence structure I'm off to bed now.
