EDIT: Took pics

Well I fudged up on this one, put my rear end on such an extreme angle that I mangled this guard/cover/boot.

Looks like I need a new one but I dont know what it is or how to FIX IT!!

Its right where my driveshaft connects to my rear end area.

Looks like it may be a cover/boot to hold in grease??

Never taken the driveshaft out before.... looks like I may have to....

Rubber boots are usually there not so much to keep the grease in as to keepthe sand and grit out of the grease.

And where is this boot located? I just crawed under my '01 PF and don't seeit.

the first thing i would do is go to the FAQ/how-to at the top of the forum, look at the FSM (factory service manual) and see what is there / how its supposed to go. Im guessing that you dropped the rear axle very low causing the driveshaft to over-extend?

And who was it that said replacing bushings was "at most a $40 job"?? out goes a big "yeah right" to them

Indeed. A better view. I was gonna crawl up under my car after looking at your initial pics. You would likely have to replace the second shaft.

Is this the result from moving your car with the lower links removed?

That half of the driveshaft is called the Birfield (SP?) joint which, as indicated by the manual, should not be disassembled and will need to be replaced in one entire piece, which may result in replacement of the entire driveshaft (unless you replace it from the center bearing back, which could also be a possibility).

Yes lol, I moved it slowly, but the rear end still rotated way to much counter clockwise.

For now I threw as much grease in there as I could, and taped it all up with this rubber tape I had.

I was told last summer I may be in for a driveshaft swap as some joint on the front of the shaft was showing wear. This may speed up the need to purchase that now!!!

Car rides like a dream though with the new suspension work and air springs though

Even on my back under the car, it looks like a piece is missing or something, the pieces dont fit together properly... so I dont even know what it looks like before it broke @@

The following is an image of the replacement item you seek. It seems you will have to purchase the entire driveshaft assembly. To replace you just need to un-bolt it from the rear final drive (definitely won't be easy since it's all under a thick layer of rust) and then remove the u-joint at the other end or unbolt at the u-joint to leave the u-joint intact.

EDIT: I don't really know why the image above shows a u-joint right at the rear final drive whereas yours does not have one. What was behind that grease boot? I can't really tell from your pictures.

i removed mine before when one of the weights thats welded on the driveshaft fell off and i was getting vibration at highway speeds, so i had to get it rebalanced.

from what i remember, removal was simple, you take off the four bolts i think it is in the back, before you take it out i remember i read to mark how it was in there so you dont rotate it at all when you put it back in, i dont know how this would go with a new driveshaft then.
