93 q45, the dash lights got really dim and the dash said, low battery recharge soon. Then the car just died. Do I need just a battery or do I need an alternator as well? It's really late and I didn't have any time to asess the situation. I have 3 error messages in the dash. Whats up with that. Transmission malfunction, brake pads worn, stop lamp inoperative. The pads are new, the brake lights work, and the transmission shfts hard, but otherwise fine. I really love my q45, but all this dumb **** is making me want a new car.

Also the Red brake light is on in the dash, very dim though. It gets brighter sometimes. My abs light indicator flickers on and off as well. the brakes are new and it is full with fluid. Could that be because the battery/alternator went out?

I think you figured out the problem.

Grab a battery in the morning, or hit the 24 hour walmart and get a cheapy to test it with.

Whens the last time the battery was replaced?Alternator replaced ever? mileage?

That message display is worthless. Just put black tape over it.

Make sure there's still a belt on your alternator, then go buy a new battery. Put the battery on a charger overnight before you install it.

Be sure to get a Nissan rebuilt alternator [if you care about it lasting more than 6 months or a year].

The chain store units almost never make it thru the 12 month warranty on a Q............even Bosch remans.

I know some people who have changed aternators 4 times before they finally believed that nothing substitutes for Nissan standard rebuilt.

If the battery is 2 years old install a new battery with a remanned alternator.

The reason why you'd want a Nissan remanned is because of the labor involved. Putting in one of these things is a big PITA. Back when had my old Camry with the alternator sitting at waist level, I wouldn't care about putting in aftermarkets since it took me 20 mins to change.

If you plan on doing the work yourself, the easiest way is to remove the passenger side tension rod, drop the AC compressor with lines still attached (it sits below the alternator) and that should give you barely enough room to manuever.

You need to find out whats causing the trans malfunction light.... Do a self diagnosis on the transmisison..... if you dont know how to do it, its in the previous posts..... if you cant find it lmk..

Other than that, you need to short your brake sensors and replace the stop lamp bulbs with OEM to get all that stuff to go away.

Do search for alt, alternator and battery in Infiniti Online Mechanic, where this post belongs.

You will find a plethora of information that will cover that part of your problems. Not sure about all the rest without any maintenance history.

Low voltage will cause most of the computer systems in th eQ to throw off all sorts of malfunction codes. Ignore them.
