Ok, so I went to the track today with my new slicks, and on my second run, it hooked up extremely well, for about 2 feet and that was it. I originally thought I broke an input shaft, but my speedometer still works. The symptoms are as follows: Clutch engages and disengages fine, it engages all the gears and the speedo works in all gears, but it doesnt even move, at all, it also rolls around just fine in or out of gear and the axles and the driveline turn just fine. So that rules out my driveline and axles, and my clutch and input shaft (maybe?), It has to be BEFORE the driveline, and AFTER the vehicle speed sensor. which im guessing is the plug that goes in just in front of the driveline?

Anyways, any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

ThanksRick

What do you mean the axles turn fine? If the axles were turning, the car would be moving.

Jack the rear end, put it in gear, and slowly release the clutch like you're taking off in a parking lot. See if the driveshaft moves. My guess is that you broke the rear end, probably the pinion gear.

Well unfortunately I was there on this sad day that Rick broke at the track... (Im Rob, I came up in the WRX wagon from eugene). So when its in gear is the driveshaft spinning? If it does, then its your rear end, but what I think you mean is that when its in gear, the driveshaft does not spin, if this is the case I would try removing the driveshaft and checking the splines where it goes into the transmission first (just because its realatively easy to get the driveshaft off, and if something is busted in the transmission youll be removing it anyways).

Mikel, you obviously didnt read my post, you can jack up the rear of the car and put it in gar and turn the back tires, the driveline and axles and everything turns fine but it doesnt turn the engine when its in gear.

We pulled the front driveline out and in the transmission end where it slides over the tail shaft, half of the tail shaft came out with it. Im probably going to call it quits on the car and buy a $200 beater car and make mine somewhat of a full race version.

BTW, those pictures show the main shaft, that connects the engine to the transmission to the driveline, broken and still stuck in the drive line. If you look closely, you can see the splines are turned just past the break.

I think it's been talked about and you'd need to have an adapter made between the bellhousing and block or have a custom bellhousing made. The 300zx transmission looks wicked compared to the KA though :D

I know a guy that says he can mate up some racing 6 speed transmission to just about anything using some "plate", it was all mechanical jargon that I didnt follow, but I will look more into it.

Oh yea if you have a Sr and blow your transmission you can use the ka transmission why not the other way for us those trannys might be a little stronger

It can be done if the machine shop knows what they are doing. With the amount of torque he is making a SR or KA trans will never stay together. They both have pot metal forks and very soft brass syincro’s. Use the 300z shifter and get a one piece drive shaft! Or stock a few KA trannys in the garage...

KA trans Suck!!! I have been through three!

look into a early 80 280zx turbo 5 speed transmission. they were borg warner T5's with bellhousings to fit Datsun L28ET six cylinders, which are the same bellhousings (I think) as KA motors, just rotated like, 10 degrees because the L motors sit in the bay a bit crooked. or even a NA 280zx transmission. or for the ultimate, get an early 240Z 4 speed. those have steel synchros, me thinks. later NA cars with 5 speeds have brass synchros.

I was thinking more along the lines of a Lenco Street Trans, I dont think I could break that.

BTW, Technoman, What broke it was the fact that I let too much shock go through the drivetrain. Instead of slipping the clutch until its engaged and THEN dumping it, I just dumped it. I actually remember thinking to myself "Maybe I should ease it out..." As I was getting my 2-step going. Once I get this fixed, I am going to be getting a Line-Loc kit so I can just ever-so-slightly let the clutch out.

I got to thinking more about that, and decided that I could even rig up my 2-step button to be activated when I pull the line lock. Plus a line-loc + spool = massaive burnouts.
