So i was thinking about contacting BC about making some cams for the CA18det, from my experience with them they seem to be nice so maybe it could happen but i would need to send them what specs would be wanted so if you have any ideas on what would be good post them up

Hi mate, Unfortunately it is not as easy as posting up specs. Unless you want to copy the aftermarket suppliers for lift and duration, you still don't know the actual timing events with some.

There are lots of different variables... And equations...

Ummm, sorry buddy, but we've been down this road before. Get yourself some made if you want and let the forum know how you like them.

You're more than welcome to try, but they are going to want a lot of money to do this.

I'm sure they are a decent company and know their products well, I never said a thing about the business..

Let me be a little more specific...

These are the things you are going to need to provide him...

Advertised Specifications (or @ whatever std they will use, eg 50 thou) or they may want both...

Timings

Inlet Open Before Bottom Dead Centre (BBDC) = ? degreesInlet Closed After Bottom Dead Centre (ABDC) = ? degreesExhaust Open Before Bottom Dead Centre (BBDC) = ? degreesExhaust Closed After Bottom Dead Centre (ABDC) = ? degrees

Cam Duration

Inlet = ? degreesExhaust = ? degrees (This info will give you your lobe center angle)

Cam Lift

Inlet = ? degreesExhaust = ? degrees@ TDC Inlet = ? degrees@ TDC Exhaust = ? degrees

Lifter Clearance *if solid type used

Inlet = ? thouExhaust = ? thou

If you cant work that out, or find another cam (not stock or you will waste your time and money) they wont be able to work it out for you unless you give them other information about your motor....

I hope this helps...

in the u.s., even getting a successful proven cam copied is apparently alot harder than one would think.Look how many "reputable" grinders the DSM crowd went thru before they got the current "HKS lower priced equivalent" they pursued. Even crower & web failed to deliver.

Lots of garbage grinds out there, and others with only mediocre gains.I went thru the exact same thing in my corolla 3TC days... until an "Isky" brand regrind transformed the pos from zero to hero! Cam swap only.HKS, Tomei etc.. always yield consistent quality results, from my observations.

I posted a monster street miata 1.8L here that set a 50trim(t3/t4) record, just shy of 600hp. At 490hp he gained ~60hp when he installed some prototype u.s. grinds, while torque increase was even more impressive (~500+ ft-lbs from a 1.8L!). He told me he was not at liberty to reveal the cam company, as he was under obligation at testing time.

I personally wouldn't go near any off-brand cam that hasn't been dyno'd before & after. Without that you're 'flyin' blind' imo.

I did see an impressive CA18 dyno posted on nissansilvia.com sporting inexpensive regrinds. Also oz/nz 2L sohc starion owners completely satisfied with regrinds (dyno proven again) from the exact same company. Obviously these cats know what they're doing and nailed it, one shot.

...just lettin' u know that it is possible, to get quality results and at a decent price.... but also be aware of the 'risk' involved

I contacted them a couple years ago. They said they would never do it even in a one off production because the cost of the tooling etc would be massive and there is not enough call for CA parts.

Stick to the parts out there already.

Seriously though, you can get Tomei pretty easily now, and even HKS cams pop up on eBay every now and then. Also, don't forget about the Yahoo Japan auctions.
