check you fluid, it should be tan like tea, not dark like coffee. find a big open parking lot and do a bunch of stops at different speeds and pedal pressure. listen for squealing and clunks. also, pull your wheels off and check the calipers to make sure they slide properly and check the pads for even wear. the reason i say all that is because i have no idea what the problem is and we need some more information to figure it out.
this sounds like a dumb question but was the pavement clear and dry? an oily patch might have thrown things off a little.
if it happens again, pump the brake pedal to regain some pressure.
by the way, your car "breaks" when it's old and crappy. your car "brakes" when you step on the "pedal" in the middle.
