The other day I saw a 300zx with a brake light kill switch and thought thats pretty hot of an idea. I guess i had never thought of doing something like that or even seen it on any street car. For certain occations it could come in very useful.. (going thru corners, breaking to prevent a speeding ticket.. are some of the few that come up).. so anyways, anyone have one on their cars? How do you install it.. openly discuss and share....

You forget it once and get the rear of your totaled and 1 or more people die because you didn't have your taillights "on" would mean a pretty bad day IMHO.

hmm, not exactly the direction i had wanted to take this conversation in.. but ok i agree with your opinion, if done one would have to take precausions that it is not left 'on'..

I dont think its something one would use all the time, just when needed i guess.. obviously when no one is behind you

sorry, but this is possibly the most dangerous automotive idea in history. This has to be up there with the corvair.

might as well just make a brake cutoff switch while you're at it...why stop at just the lights?

that's like making an exhaust diverter that goes into the car so it wont be loud outside when cops are nearby

i say you do it! +1 for darwin's theory...what was it again?

The only purpose it would have is for not looking too suspicious for cops and that's too much trouble just for that. Just use the e-brake to slow down, granted it's not as effective as all 4 brakes but it doesn't cause nose dive or light up your taillights. Oh, and don't speed.

i would think if you are going that fast in the first place, they are gona notice, and brake lights have nothing to do with the radar or laser they would have on you in a second

Cops have brake light kill switches. It's so they can be less noticeable as they creep up on someone at night. I'm sure there's other reasons too.

A guy I went to school with works for the county, maintaining and repairing Sherriff's depatment cars (among other county pieces of crap). He used to f*** with people while he was test driving them. One thing he would do is speed way ahead a pack of traffic, hit the brake light kill switch, then slow down to a crawl. He thought it was funny how people would panic as they came up on a Sherriff all of a sudden. He's kind of crazy.

I think a brake light kill switch would be a great idea for your car, if you're a kidnapper, stalker, or serial killer. Or, if you let road rage get the best of you

Come on guys, you are supposed to be better then this. Stop with the A$$hole remarks! He asked a question, he did not ask for your opinions!

To make a brake light "kill switch", you have to put an inline switch on the fuse for the brake lights. Flip the switch to "off" and it would open the circuit, causing the brake lights not to come on

Oh, and it's actually a good idea. When the cops are chasing you in semi-heavy traffic, it's hard for them to follow where you're at when you don't have any brake lights . And when it's really dark out, not having any tail lights or Brake lights would be nice .

Hypathetical situation:

It's Mid-night in the boonies. You speed by a cop at 150MPH. The cop is on an over-pass stopped. He clocks you. He turns on his lights and starts towards the onramp. Let's assume you're on a freeway. By the time he actually gets to the on ramp, you are already almost 1/2 mile ahead. You look in your rear-view mirror and he the "cherries" going. You flip the brake light switch. By this time, you are almost 1 mile ahead. Now, with no brake lights, you can either come to a stop and hide the car on the side of the road somewhere, or you can get off at the next off-ramp. No brake lights make it very hard to see someone at 1 mile away.

You'd have to kill your tailights too. Or add a low center mounted light in the front so you could still kind of see where you're going, but be less noticeable with your headlights off too.

I was going to mention something about cops (or anyone else) chasing you, but to be honest, I didn't want to get jumped on, like "you shouldn't be running anyways", etc.

My comment was a joke (not a very good one though).

It still is a pretty unsafe idea. You could add an LED to indicate the position of the switch as a reminder, but still, that isn't fool proof either.

WOW.... thats my first response to all your comments... you guys took this to a whole new level.. i meant it was a hot idea meaning i had never seen or thought anyone had something like that. whatever, u guys can flame me all you want, but its not like i have it in my car or am going to get it.. it was just a comment.. like the other thousands of comments that are made on this forum.

Forthermore, i am not a new member, been here for yrs, not a ricer, nor a jackass. Again bringing a subject to the table shouldn't merit such a harsh response even if it's an unsafe one or one you disagree with (how many post talk about street racing, drifting on streets, etc.. when they are for one illegal and very unsafe as well,. but these for the most part are supported. ) just food for thought...

Anyhow, thanks for the support peteros...

Why not have one of those switches that doesn't actually "click" over and mount it right behind your steering wheel. That's what I did on my 240. Worked in a jam and didn't cut the power to the brake lights unless I kept my finger on the button.

I remember hearing that ford did this brake light cut off switch thin in the 60s on the gt40 to fool the ferrari drivers or something like that. But don't take my word for it. I'm really tired.

On topic, if you're too stupid to figure out how to interrupt a circuit, you're too stupid to use it properly.
