I have two concerns about my new G35X.

Most important is the break in period. When picking up my new (11 miles) car, I asked the salesman about break in period. He said there was none, so I took it to the red line a couple times on the way home. I was surprised to see there IS a break in period stated in the manual. When confronted, the salesman said he and the service dept stand by the no break in statement.

Also, I noticed a small dent on drivers door and a paint chip that had been touched-up on the passenger door. Both small, but not expected on a new car. There was a cloudy area next to the drivers door nick that made it look as though a repair had been made. The entire car was machine buffed leaving swirl marks - another surprise.

Just wondered if anyone else has had finish problems or conflicting information about break in period. I tend to agree with the written caution from Infinity in the owners manual.

Feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

Have no worry about it, so long as you floored it just once or twice. I think you are okay. Many sales people have little idea about how these cars really work or handle. Sometimes when I go to my dealership, i am the one tutoring them on the intricacies of these cars, and they just stand there with their jaws hanging down looking at me. So, I think you will be fine. As for the chirps, dent, and swirl marks, could have been from a number of places form factory to the dealership. Again, don't sweat the small stuff--tell the dealer to fix the swirls and the chirp. I am sure they will gladly do so.

Salesmen know nothing. They just try to sell you a car, and that's it. Ask them anything automotive related and they'll just bob back and forth trying to bs an answer.

I agree with Jacko - if you redlined it once or twice, you shouldn't have much issue, but take it easy on the car for the first 1000-1500 miles, as the manual states. You want to make sure that everything sets in the engine properly and that you aren't placing too much stress on it to start out. Another good idea would be to change your oil around 1k to help get the excess debris out of the engine.

As for the body issues - take it back to the dealer and demand that they fix it. They sold you the car - not Infiniti. They're responsible for the little stuff that shows up, and you certianly should not have to live with a ding here and there if you don't want to. If they cry back, call up Infiniti Corporate and complain. That will get them moving

Hahahah

Well I had an 07 and I redlined the thing often since day one. Never had an issue. The 08 was rdlined already a few times not as bad as the 07.

I would take the car back and ask the manager what they have done on the car and show him the repairs and scratches. Now you are relying on him. The delivery check is really important. Next time if you buy a car go around and check it get them to signed the checklist and mark the area where the problem is. In that case they have to fix it. If I had a delivery like that I would of just walked out of the door.

The reasons why. First if they treat the car like that when it is new before signing. I only can imagine what they do after.

Talk to the manager asap to get it fixed. Longer you wait the less chance you get this solved.

Welcome to NICO and congrats on the new ride!

A few things about the break-in procedures...

1. Try to keep the RPMs under 5k until the first oil change at 1k.

2. Don't use cruise control for extended periods of time as the engine shouldn't be at the same RPM during the break-in period.

3. Change the oil at 1k with you're preferred synthetic (I recommend Royal Purple).

4. After you do the first oil change, drive it normal and change the oil again at 3k, then every 3-5k after.

Following these procedures will ensure your engine breaks-in properly.

As for the car's finish, you don't have to wait to fix the dent or wax/polish. The only time you have to wait to wax/polish the finish is after new paint is applied. It needs about 30 days to "breath". The dealer should fix the swirl marks to your satisfaction...you may have to keep on them a bit if you have a crappy dealer.

Thanks to all those who replied to my plea for help. I've just returned from a body shop and the expert says it looks like someone tried to do some quick fixes, one of which spilled over onto the front fender and now that should be repainted as well. The swirl marks are suspicious too since new cars are usually not machine buffed, especially black cars. The swirls will be hard to remove, even by hand. I noticed black residue when wiping the nicked areas for the first time. Seems to me they used a black wax... to cover imperfections. The whole thing seems rather unusual. It is time to call the dealer.
