Just got my brand new G35 coupe with sports package and stickshift, love the performance and looks....But the day after I get the car the service engine light comes on! Hasn't gone away. Anyone else have this problem? Is it common?

Just curious Stan... did you fill up shortly after leaving the dealer? My '04 had been fine up until just a short time ago, when I filled up, and apparently didn't click the gas cap enough times to ensure a good seal. My 'Service Engine Soon' light came on as well. I reset it, filled up again, and made sure to click the cap 3 or 4 times... the light hasn't come on since.

DAMN! good call Will! I forgot about that...I always click that thing like 6 times.

To reset, did you unplug the battery or have the dealer do it?

Neither Joe... there is a procedure that uses the gas pedal and the ignition...

"Here is a quick way to reset your ECU. It is also known to clear codes thrown, and turn off the "Service Engine Soon" Light. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON” and wait 3 seconds. Repeat the following two procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds: Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD). Fully release the accelerator pedal. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the CEL starts blinking. Fully release the accelerator pedal (while the CEL is still blinking) Wait about 10 seconds. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for more than 10 seconds. Fully release the accelerator pedal (The CEL light will continue to blink). Turn ignition switch to “OFF” position and now you can start the car. The CEL light should be gone. "

Works like a charm.

Thanks all... but I am still curious as to whether that was the fix for Stan. With a few exceptions, (my parent's new Frontier was one), there are not many reasons that the SES light will come on in a brand new vehicle.

I tried the reset technique, and it didn't seem to work. When I was fully depressing the clutch for a while the light didn't come on....just made a really loud noise that woke up all my neighbors. I've also screwed in the gas cap to hear 10 clicks...

infinititech1, how did I plug in the o2 sensor??? Big Will, any idea why the light wouldn't start blinking during the process? Is it different with the 6mt transmission than the automatic?

This sucks cause I totally love the car but work an 11 hour day and have to find time to take it to the service department.

Great to be a member of this community, thanks for the welcome and the help guys!

If you can get under your car, follow the exhaust line. You should see the O2 sensor on the front section. Re-seat the plugs.

Every 1996 and later car owner should have a OBD2 scan tool to read codes and reset those as appropriate! The $50-$100 expenditure will be useful in every car

There are multi hundreds of codes possible [and delineated].

You were depressing the clutch? Was that to do the reset? The process requires you depress the GAS pedal... and the noise?? Did you have the car RUNNING at the time? The car is not supposed to be running... just the ignition in the 'ON' position. At this point I have to defer to Joe... you should have the dealer handle it.

I feel you on the work thing. Maybe you could have a friend take the car in for you? Or maybe have AAA tow it in?

Would that be helpful without knowing what the codes mean Dennis? Is there a place online that has a list of what the codes mean?

haha. this happened to me few days back with only 600 miles on odometer. i took it to a dealer and first thing they checked was the gas cap. it was loose and i felt really stupid. they told me the light will go away after few days and it is gone now.

Dude I did it with the gas on...haha I feel like an idiot, especially since I probably somewhat screwed up the brand new engine! At least it's a lease though...I'll try again tonight when I get home from work

I am very glad to hear that Stan. Glad to be of help too... but now, cinch down that gas cap, and if the light comes back on, I would definitely take it into the dealer.
