Hey everybody, I'm 19 and my dad owns a 1975 Datsun 280z he bought brand new. According to my mom, this car was is pride and joy for years, until the early 1990's when he put it in storage before we moved to australia. We got back to the states and the car stayed in storage, a few years ago we took it out of storage and moved it into our garage. There it has sat, collecting dust. It hasn't been turned over since 1990. My dad just has too much to do anymore to work on it. This car is in incredible condition, only one, penny sized rust spot, the paint is in amazing condition...he had it painted in the 80's a sky blue with silver flakes throughout. It only has 75k original miles. What little we have figured out from moving it is that the rear brakes are frozen up for some reason.

Having not started it in nearly 20 years, what are the initial precautionary measures we should take before even thinking about turning it over?

Thanks guys! And we love the website.

i am not really sure. but i'd like to follow this thread. definately post pics.

i would say make sure it has all the fluids drained and new stuff put in, brake fluid, clutch, oil, fuel, coolant, etc etc.

The car is packed pretty tight in the garage, so I wasn't able to get any good side-shots of the car, but I could get a few interior, engine compartment and a heads on shot. I'll see if I can dig up some old pictures we took when the car was brought to our house from storage sitting on the back of the flatbed truck...sitting out in the summer sun man that thing looked good. I wish there wasn't so much dust on it and you guys could really see the beautiful paint

sounds liek a great project, the rear brakes are siezed either because the e-brake was left on and the lever rusted in place ont he backing plate, or the cables siezed up, or if the braks was left off then the pads corroded to the aluminum rear drums, either way removing them will be a PITA but a necesarry PITA#1 drain and replace all the fluids, Oil and filter, gas and fuel filter, coolant, brake fluid, cluthc fluid, diff oil, trans oil#2 pull all the spark plugs, spray a bit of wd 40 down each spark plug hole#3 disconnect the positive side of the coil as well as s the injectors or the injector relay, top off allt he fluids, and with the plugs still out, crank the engine, let it crank for 30 seconds or so, put in new plugs, reconnect the coil and injectors, crodss your fingers and hit it

I would actually manually turn the crank to get everything oiled up before using the ignition to further oil it. Then again, I'm cautious.

From the brake standpoint I would plan on a complete rebuild of front and rear before attempting to really drive it. Consider replacing rubber lines and such as well.

Not really...the only time NICO really DIES is around like 4-5 AM...lol

I honestly never think to peruse the other forums on here...When I log on NICO (AKA open my web-browser lol) I check GenChat, the Maxima forums, and my Watched Topics...then I usually flip open like 7-8 more tabs and check my email/facebook/other forums.

I never think to check out the other sections on here....most of the time anyway.

Clearly I miss out on alot when I don't!!
