Hi there I was wondering if someone could help me. I have a 1993 240Sx and when I put my car in reverse after stopping there is a tump in the rear when I back up. Are my brakes not releasing properly? Or is it not even my brakes but something else like the diff? Thanks

i'm having a similar grinding issue. It happens the first time I release the parking break. I pulled the calipers today and it looks like the e-brake is still engaged on one of them. Either my caliper is seized or the e-brake cable is rusted in its housing. I'm going to take her down to my friend's shop this weekend so I can take a closer look at it.

Diff may be worn and clunking. Subframe bushings may be shot and letting the subframe bonk on stuff. U-joints may be worn and clunking.

My bet is this: You were going foreward and stopped. The drivetrain is loaded in one direction and when you go to accelerate all the slack in the U-joints and the diff is being taken up, hence the clunk. If it is a mild sound and happens predictably, you are probably ok, though further diagnosis is always important. If it is a loud bang or happens at odd times, you may want to seek answers sooner than later.

Thanks. It only happens after I have had the e-brake on and when I am backing up.

If you're hearing a sort of clunking/squeal noise when going backwards have the rear calipers checked. They have a bunch of pins that have to fit together when they're assembled. If they're not quite right you get that nasty sound. Apparently this is a fairly common problem with people who do their own brakes or get them done at a shop that's not familiar with 240s.

Mine were rebuilt (on a 1993 as well) by the previous owner and I have the same thing. First on my list of things to fix when I get rolling again.

does anyone know how to check those pins and how to fix them? I have the clunk clunk noise in reverse and a grinding (not squel) coming from the rear when lightly braking (seems to rise and fade with the rotation of the wheel). i hate that noise so much! arrrggghhh
