My rotors are going out...:help I was wondering the difference between, crossdrilled, slotted, or both!? Also with Brake pads, carbon fiber or full metal? And how much do stainless steel brake lines help? Thanks for all the help in advance guys. LOGAN

The difference between them is basically is basically, as the name implies, that cross-drilled rotors have holes drilled in a cemicircular (hope thats the right word) pattern, while slotted rotors have slots in the rotors, and a rotor that has both is both cross-drilled and slotted. From what I hear, cross-drilled rotors are more prone to cracking. But both are just a means of helping to expel heat from the rotors. I have a set of cross-drilled and slotted rotors, given me no trouble so far. As for pads, I've never used carbon fiber pads, but I have a set of fully metallic pads, they produce a lot of dust, they're kind of noisy, take a while to heat up before they reach peak performance, and (just from personal experience) are sort of lousy in the rain, but if you can deal with all that, they perform pretty well, I guess it just depends on the brand and model of the pads are, I personally use Wilwood Matrix "d" compound pads. Brake lines do give a noticeable increase in pedal pressure, I didn't notice any more of that mushy feeling with brake lines, just don't expect them to knock your socks off, I guess. I just replace the ones on my 240 with a set of Earls SS lines, if you can spare the cash then by all means go for it. hope that helps.

im not to hot with the idea of putting on rotors with holes in them...its taking away from the amount of rotor for the pads to grip...doesnt sound good to me...just my opinion though

Well, the point of cross drilled rotors is to reduce heat. Excessive heat causes rotors to warp, therefore they'll need to be machined more and be replaced more often. What you lose in surface area you gain in more efficient gas transfer.

Rotor surface area is not relevant to braking ability. [/quote]

Please explain...

If I had 3" rotors on my TTZ that would not make any difference from 11"?

doesn't more surface area= more area for friction?

No.

The point of a cross-drilled rotor is to give pad gas and water a place to go, instead of forming a layer between the pad and the rotor.

They may also dissipate heat better, but that's not their reason for existing.

What you lose in surface area you gain in more efficient gas transfer.

Rotor surface area is not relevant to braking ability.

whoa, easy there chetmaster.

okay, i think i understand. so you can only apply as much force or as consistent a force as the pistons will allow, and that force will be the same no matter what the area is that it's spread over.

it still doesn't seem right, but lots of stuff like that doesn't seem right to me.

I didn't actually run through all the equations, so no, it just bulged a bit. I know I will be getting into some large arguements with my friends over this very thing pretty soon though, so I'll be bookmarking this.
