Brakes?

It's about time for another brake change, and before I drop a few hundred bucks for more factory pads installed, I have two questions:

1. Is a brake job something you can do without being a mechanic? I know it's more than popping them in, but how hard is it really?

2. I want something a little smoother and maybe with a little more stopping power, is there anything with more oomph that will fit the factory calipers, or at least factory rotors?
