My rear brakes squeal on my s13, they only do it when i press down the pedal slightly, once i press it down more they stop, any ideas on how to stop this? Also has anyone ever used that brake silencer spray stuff?

Mine still makes a noise after replacing all my rotors with cross drilled and slotted ones. My friend who installed them for me suggested the brake silencer stuff. I'm not sure how or where to apply them but I'm gonna try it out and see what happens.

the only brake silencer that I know of is a spray on chemical you apply to the pads. I have cheap squeeling pads too...

Disc brake quiet is the stuff you are looking for. The orange goop that comes in a bottle is better than the spray IMHO. Just take the pads out and apply liberally to the pads backing side (not the friction side).

How could applying something to the side that the piston pushes on quieten down the squeeling, if it squeels when the pads get more friction from being pushed against the rotor? My Z brakes do this :/

Sure, but it'll be a while before I try that stuff on my brakes though. I'm lazy when it comes to taking the wheels off. I'll probably do it when I get a new set of struts/springs, front brake pads and then bleed the brakes, paint the calipers and wheels.. I don't see this happening until 2-3 months from now or whenever I get enough money to upgrade my suspension.

Because the noise is caused by vibration, which is what noise is.

I figured the friction between the two surfaces was what made the noise....

i think he was asking why isn't the sound caused by the friction side rubbing the rotor

You may want to try and re-bed the pads. Take a 'Scotch brite' pad and gently clean the rotor surface as best you can. Then take the car out and make 6-10 stops from aprox. 35 mph with moderate pressure. Make an additional 2-3 hard stops from aprox 40-45 mph. Do not drag the brakes. Then park the car and let it sit overnight. That will allow the brakes to cool off all the way and you should have a nice even transfer film on the surface of the rotor. When you bed in pads a thin layer of compound will stick to the rotor. If they are not broken in correctly that film will be uneven. When you apply the brakes the brakes will grab and slip, grab and slip as they hit the patches with the transfer film and then the bare rotor. That is what causes most vibration problems.
