I have a brakes question... so I guess this is the best place to start.

I've had my Versa for almost 4 years now and have quite a bit of miles (about 77k). In that time, I have had to replace the tires and get it inspected every year and each time I have the brakes looked at, I get the same response: they are fine. Here in VA, they check the front and back on the safety inspections. Last fall when I had it done, the brakes were squeaking and the mechanic told me they were fine and that a little squeaking will happen. He was right and it went away.

I guess that I should explain that my daily commute is about 20 miles each way and freeway for all except maybe 2 miles. I am also known to be light on my brakes (as in I let the car slow itself down and have only slammed on them maybe twice).

So I am wondering what is up. I have to go on a long trip and just want to get the pads replaced and was wondering about how much that usually runs. Although I can do rudimentary stuff on the car, I haven't done the brakes and probably won't. It doesn't do anything out of the ordinary (no shuddering, weird sounds, etc) but I want to get to have peace of mind bc I will be out of town for a few weeks and don't want mechanical problems spoiling my vacation...

Any thoughts?

assuming you don't need to turn the rotors, changing pads is pretty easy. I have seen other people say their dealers quote $400 to change the pads and shoes. If you want to change the pads, even if they aren't needed, that's up to you.

It is very easy to change the pads if the rotors are in good shape. The pads just slip out with some clips. But, the shoes are a different story. But, pads wear out a lot quicker then the rear shoes since 70% of braking comes from the front disc brakes so you probably only need the front pads done.

Advanced Auto wants $45.00 for the front pads. They are ceramic but not high quality ceramic. They come with a lifetime warranty. When they wear out you take them back and exchange them for another set.

The rotors are $49.00 a piece. So parts are about $150.

In your case it sounds like you are going to be ok. Light braking. You may not have to touch them for another 15 or 20k.

I did not replace my brakes yet but I am going to inspect them soon. They should have a silencer or warning tab that makes noise when the pads start getting to the point of needing replaced. As soon as you start hearing that anoying sound replace them.

But, first can anyone confirm if the OEM pads have a tab? I should be able to let you know this weekend. Probably Saturday if no one chimes in.

Yep ditto lol. Took mine off last night.

67k and My pads are fine. I thought they might be wearing out along with my rotors. I made a post about this. Not the case. Repair shop I went to tried to say they were.
