hey thsi si the first post from me. im not a dumby so dont flame me. i used the search. well i dont have a 240 YET i am in the market but what i want is hard to find around here. '91+ coupe 5 speed if you can help me out. well i was drivin a 240 today and around town the brakes seemed fine firm with good stopping power. well i went out to the boonies and did the real testing. i flogged it as best i could with a car that wasnt mine. i was alone so i didnt hold much back. but after my flog down ( 5-10 minutes) i was headed back and goin down a hill. hit the brakes and got very little braking. floored it and still same brake pressure. well i was wonderin if i had just boiled the fluid that quick or if it was bad lines or a air bubble from where they hadnt bled them once b4. but it was scary i stopped but barely. anyway i was wonderin if this was a major problem. the stock brakes will be gone eventually but prolly not on the first round of upgrades. but is that a major prob or should i think about droppin my cash.

well the stock brakes do heat up fast an fade, mine get reall squishy after alot of heavy braking too, i think mines is a combo of things. old worn out lines, bad fluid, cheap pads, torn up rotors, a zip tie in place of a caliper bolt , possible siezed caliper, wow its amazing i stop at all !!!!!! im fixing that zip tie thing in the moring by the way

thanx for that info it makes me feel better. the brakes are out for sure but when is another question. i dont know if they will be out with the first round of upgrades or not. its gonna be either wheels and exaust or wheel and suspension or wheels and brakes. but that makes me feel better about the car

stock 240 brakes suck for hard driving. Fortunately for us, Nissan designed our caliper brackets the same as many other models of their vehicles, so we lots of options. 300ZX TT, Infinity J30, Q45 (not 100% certain, but pretty sure). And if you have a truck load of money, even the skyline brakes will fit. I think I'm going with a J brake kit, although they don't look really flashy.

And I would do a wheel/suspension combo, although I think a new paint job looks better than a set of rims, but to each their own

peace

Sounds like you had heated the pads to the point they started outgassing. Basically, the pad matrial begins to vaporize and the gas becomes trapped between the pad and the rotor and basically makes it harder for the pad to make contact with the rotor. Kind of a similar effect to tires hydroplaning on water.

In looking for upgrades, determine the type of driving you will be doing. If you will only be driving moderately hard, then you may be able to get away with just pads that are made for higher heat. For hard-driving, perhaps bigger rotors. And by driving style, I'm referring to braking only as some types of racing require very little braking and only for a short period of time(autocross for example) and others require repeated laps of hard heavy braking(road courses).
