I was wondering if anyone has had problems with there brakes wearing out faster then they should be. I have a 07 Versa with 15000kms on it and I was told by the dealer that the brake pads are worn out and the rotors are rusty and they both need to be replaced and that they are not covered under warranty because they are not defective , and they want $500 plus tax to replace, does this seem strange to anyone that they wear this fast? I bought the car 1 month ago with 10000kms so I don't know how the other people drove the car. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. thanks for the info

I'm not sure about the fast wear, but brakes and rotors are almost never covered by warranty. You should be able to change them yourself for much cheaper.

Yesterday my Versa turned over 40,000 miles (64,000 km) and I've not yet had any problems with the brakes. (Or anything else, for that matter.) And that's driving in mountains and foothills, so I do get the occasional chance to use the brakes!

I've yet to change a set myself at work and with that kind of mileage, we usually cover under warranty until 22,000 miles. That price is outrageous, we charge $170 plus tx. at my dealership, that's resurface rotors and replace pads.

There is never really a "set" amount of time that brakes last. They'll ususally have an average, but it depends entirely on where and how you drive. If you live in a city with alot of hills and do primarially city driving, it's not impossible to wear your brakes out in less than 12,000 miles or so. I primarially commute in my car, and do very little braking compared to the amount of miles I drive, so it's likely that I won't need new brakes in less than 60,000 miles. But, as previously mentioned, brakes will never be covered under warranty unless they are determined to be defective. They are a "wear and tear" part, just like a battery on a computer that will not be covered under warranty.

i thought breaks were suppose to be changed every 6months to a year...matters on your driving habits. thats what I heard and have known. from 6k-12k miles. because im at 6k miles and I already hear them starting to make noise...buts its just dust but it only does it once in awhile.

I can normally get 20k miles out of a set of front pads and 40-60k out of a set of front rotors. But it depends on driving habits and quality of brakes.

The OEM rotors in my wife's Hyundai really sucked, they warped twice by 40k miles, so we replaced them with a set of EBC sport rotors and Raybestos OEM-style pads (didn't need the autocross/track pads for what we were doing with the truck). So far so good with the new brakes, but we haven't put enough miles on them to give a full report.

I'm at almost 7k miles on V-Squared, and haven't heard a peep from the brakes, no abnormal feel, no pull... so all is good on that front.

Thanks for all the info guys. I called the other dealership were I live and he said it seems really wired that they are gone already, I am taken it in to get it checked out by them next week, I hope they will cover it but if not then I gotta change them before it gets too cold. Also is it possible to aftermarket parts for it, I mean the pads and rotors or will i most likely have to get them from the dealer? (b/c dealers are usually more expensive) the reason im asking is because my last car was a 2003 sunfire and the clutch went and I could only gets parts from the dealer, they told me it was because the car was newer it they didn't have aftermarket parts. ($600 for a slave cylinder) anyway thanks for the tips guys

FWIW, Nissan is currently facing a class action suit due to premature brake wear on the G35....they told the owners that it was common to have a full brake job every 12K because it is a high performance car...

They lied...and wound up reimbursing for the brake jobs...and extending the warranty. The class action suit is because the affected G35 owners feel that the car has been devalued...

Nissan also lied for years to Titan/Armada/QX56 owners who were going through brakes prematurely...told them that it was entirely normal, or that they were driving incorrectly, or towing too heavy a load, etc...it turned out that the rotors were waaay too light weight... I believe the Z had a premature brake wear issue on certain model years as well..

Premature brake wear seems to be a weak point with Nissan in some cases...good idea to keep it in mind for future reference...

Here is a link to an article regarding the G35 issue:

My father has an 05 or 06 Maxima and he brought his car in and they changed his pads and rotors for free because they said they went bad too fast...I wonder if that's related to this lawsuit???
