First. If anyone knows of a source of the shims that go between the pad and caliper, i need to know. Nissan wants 80 dollars for them, i cant do that. Anyway though, i've put my rear brakes together withtout the shims, only to discover that the pads arent even hitting the entire rotor. The outer 1/2 of the rotor is rusty. I'm thinking about buying some of those rubber/foamish pads to go behind my pads. Any other tips? second, and more irritating. Why does my shifter rattle? It does it mostly in 1st, 3rd and occasionally 5th gear. Is there an adjustment? If i push the stick up a bit it usually stops...it's mostly when the car's under acceleration that it rattles (the ****er torques back a bit and apparently rubs something) is there a bushing or something i can replace?Thanksast

You can get the brake shims ordered from most Auto parts stores. O'Reilley I am sure can order them for you, usually overnight. Your shifter rattles from worn out bushings most likely. Nissan sells the shifter bushing for $9, and there is a writeup for how to replace it on http://www.240sx.org

should the shims be made of metal? if so, what do I ask for. I've stopped at every auto parts store in town (o'reilly, napa, autozone) and found nothing except the rubberish shims.

It's the writeup for installing a short shifter. It should be under the FAQ section, under short shifter, just follow those instructions but put your new bushing in. Shims should be made of metal, mine are, I haven't replaced them in forever though, maybe they make rubber ones nwo for noise issues, although that makes no sense because of the INCREDIBLE heat of a braking assembly.............
