Ok. So I got fed up with my rotor/pad swap so i decided to bring it somewhere. I asked a couple people from here if it would ok to not drive with 1 of the calipers on because i couldnt get it back together and some of you said it would be ok. I drove from my house to tire kingdom. It was about a 4 minute drive. So i go back like 3 hours later and they're closing up and the guy says im going to need to get a new caliper. Is that right? Cuz i asked a few of you on AIM and you said it wouldnt be a big deal.

My driver's side caliper bolts managed to walk themselves out once. I drove around for a few days listening to a weird "thump thump thump" coming from that wheel. I figured the tire was just wearing out, but when I pulled the wheel off, the caliper was hanging off completely. I put it back on with new bolts, and have never had another problem with it. You can't trust professional mechanics. Everytime I've taken any car in for a brake job, they try to tell me I need new calipers.

why bother proving them wrong? Just say "don't replace my caliper. If you're not ok with that, I'll go elsewhere."

Just dawned on me... you think they tried to turn back the piston and broke it themselves?

my friends pad fell out somehow from his front drivers side, he was driving with on pad on the wheel for a while, when he took it in they said he needed a new caliper cuz they coudn't push the piston back. so i dunno, they might be telling the truth they might not

You cant just leave the hydraulic line hanging there. As soon as you try to brake, all your hydraulic fluid will spew out.

What do you mean. I guess you guys should know where the caliper actually was... it was strapped to the body next to the wheel. And the brake line was still on.

i would do all my brake work.

(if i understand your problem correctly)your caliper(s)probably is pressurized (lock). mine did the same, it just wouldn't depressed. this cheap little "Caliper Spreader" does the trick:

well, if you are going to drive home, the piston is gonna have to be in the caliper, and the caliper is going to have to be spread...STRONG. I wouldnt doubt a caliper could crush wood. If you didnt have it spread (unless the piston was VERY rusted in), the piston will pop out as soon as you touch the brakes and bye bye fluid

Wouldn`t it be cheaper for you to just buy a caliper and do it yourself. If it were me I would buy both sides Q45 caliper and rotors. That way u get a brake upgrade that has 2 pistons instead of one. I checked out Autozone and you can get rebuild ones for 90 a set and the rotors were only 35 a piece. Only thing there is a core charge. I don`t think they are smart enough to figure out what core you gave them.

I had a problem with my caipers locking up whilst going down the interstate. SUCKS!!!!!!! Sudden stops from 75 are not cool at all! I've now replaced both of them and still have no idea what the hell was wrong with them in the first place. All I know is, I don't ever want to replace another one for the rest of my life cuz I'm really tired of that crap.

have you checked the grease in your brake pins? Also check the seals around the piston themselves. If the new calipers aren't seizing up, then chances are it was the rubber seal that goes around the piston inside the caliper.

Hey 180fan......the old calipers were pretty rusted and I couldn't get the piston to move at all. And believe me, I tried everything to get the thing to go in. I just went on ahead and replaced them cuz I got tired of dealing with them.

Oh ok. Well about the piston, you should have just replaced the piston, and gotten a new seal kit. There's an inner o-ring that needs to have the red grease put on it. After you do that, you need to lube the piston with brake fluid in order to get it to slide in. but that's after getting the boot on the piston, and greasing the lip and the inside of the boot for the piston itself.
