A great resource for Nissan Sentra, Infiniti G20, 200sx, Pulsar, NX1600, NX2000, Tsuru, Primera and Sunny owners.

How long do brake rotors and drums last? I have 52k miles and we use it as a commuter car so a lot of highway mileage. Should I change them now or wait until 75k/100k? Thanks.

Brakes wear out based on usage, not mileage. Have the technicians take a peak at the pads and shoes next time you get an oil change. If you have squealing sounds like metal on metal, or the brakes don't seem to bring the car to a stop like they should, then you're due/ overdue to have them replaced.

During the last oil change they recommended we change the pads and shoes. They said we had 3mm left on front pads and 4mm left on rear shoes.

Okay, The rears seem fine and the fronts could be replaced. Off of the top of my head, new front pads would be about 10mm and rears would be like 6mm thick. Get rotors with the front pads. Install them, bleed the brakes, drive a bit and "bed" the pads into the rotors. The rears will hold just fine until your next servicing IMHO.
