Hello, I am a new club member, I am an aspiring Do-it-yourselfer home mechanic. I own two nissans: a 93 Q45 (infinity), and an 85 maxima. As my vehicles are getting older and older it becomes more and more feasible to learn as much and do as much as my own work as possible.I have done simple things like oil changes, fuel and air filter replacement. The most advanced things that I have done are replacing my 10 year old fuel pump in my q45 and replacing lower control arm bushings in my maxima.

I decided to do a rear break job on my maxima. i bought a C clamp and used it to get the pads off, and the caliper off the rotor. But now, i cant seem to get the rotor off. I dont knowif the rotors are under spec. But I plan to replace them anyway, considering that one of the rotors had a HUGE groove in it from the pad 'sensor.' The pad was completely worn.

Anyway, my rotors are not budging. in fact i hit one of them sooo hard that it broke in two pieces. The larger circle (the part the pad rubs on) literally seperated from the smaller circle( the part with the four bolts).I dont know what to do, or where to turn, i was considering towing it via flatbed to a local mechanic to get :1. laughted at and 2. ripped off.

if im gonna get laughted at, i would rather it be from one of you guys in the club, at least you can provide some helpful info and wont rip me off..

Any help would be appreciateded. Also, according to my haynes manual, it seems that some maximas have drum brakes in the rear. But my 85 max has rotors and pads all the way around.-Bry

This might not help in your particular situation, but see if there are 2 small holes in the rotor near the lug studs. They would be threaded, and probably 8 or 10mm in dia. If they're on there, insert screws (verify the pitch first) into them and tighten the screws, a few threads at a time, to separate the rotors from the hubs.

Hi DAEDLAUS

I know what holes you are reffering to, but unfortuantely i dont have them on my rotors. I did some searching on the net and I have visited several webpages that described a similar method to remove them. Since i didnt have any threaded holes, i just hammered away at 'em, in an attempt to knock them loose, but no such luck.

BTW, thanks for such a quick Response :-)

How about using a large 2 or 3-jaw puller? Any chance there's something actually securing the rotor to the hub besides friction/rust?

Did you have the E-brake on? If its an inner drum style E-brake that would hold it on.... no holes sounds odd.

Good thinking on that one. I wouldn't bet a dime against that theory.

This model more probably has the rotor and hub as one piece which means you have to remove the bearing cap and nut to replace the rotors. It's been awhile since I've done brakes on the older models.

Ohhhhhh,THat might be the trick. Ill try that. I did pry off the bearing cap but i didnt consider that i would have to take off the nut. Ill try that this weekend, thanks so much. :-)
