Hello folks,

I did some search but on the topic I found, I didn't found my answer about brake replacement.

Actually, I have a Rogue 2009 and I'm at 36k kms. I will need to replace my front brake in about 6-8k kms. When I was at the dealer, I ask for the cost and for the front, brake pad, rotor and installation, the cost is about 560$ can + tx. To be honest, I found this a little expensive, but I don't know how long it takes to change front brake. If it takes 2 hours, at 90$/h, well, the cost of the parts is not so bad, but I would like to found some alternative.

Anyone knows some alternative for rotor and pad? I'm looking for a factory equivalent.

Thanks for your help

Hey Koolyce,

We've got a couple of really good Rogue brake discussion threads going, here:

and here:

I'm very surprised that your brake pads are ready to be replaced at only 36,000 km, we have heard reports of brake rotors warping prematurely but the pads are lasting much longer than 36k for most owners, however this depends heavily on driving style.

Did the dealer specifically tell you that your pads AND rotors need to be replaced? If so I personaly would recommend going to another shop for a quote, the brakes on the Rogue are not unique and any good shop can do the job well and can order OEM spec pads and rotors if this is what you want. Check out the two above threads for details, and I strongly recommend getting more than one quote!

Hi,

Thanks for your prompt reply. I read the threads and I still don't know what I will do. I will call 2-3 shop out there, but the problem here (Montreal), is to find a good garage and mecanicien.

If I want break the closest of OEM, should I go with ceramic? With rotor, so many different brand...

The dealer give me the quote on the OEM.

Thanks

There are a lot of choices, I'm not sure what the "best" answer is, but if you want OEM just tell the shop you want OEM or close to it and they'll source the parts for your, that's part of what you're paying them for!

And no, ceramic would be different than the OEM pads, there are some advantages to good ceramic pads, such as they should be easier on rotors as they don't get as hot (less likely to warp rotors due to heat), less dust, some claim better performance and longer life.

Why don't you go to a couple of shops, ask around and try to find some that friends or family recommend and have had good experiences with. Then get the shops to give you a quote on OEM pads and rotors, and ask if they can offer ceramic pads with a price and ask for their opinion on the products. They will be able to give you their advice on the pros and cons of each, and combined with the price comparisons you can make an informed decision. Also ask about warranty on the parts.

If it's a full front brake service with replacement pads and rotors, you are looking at ~$300 in parts plus approx. 2 hours labor. $560 isn't bad, but you can do better. Shop around.

And yes, 36K on stock brakes is very unusual. Unless you do nothing but drive in the city and are very hard on brakes.

I also recommend you get your rear brakes cleaned and serviced while your fronts are replaced. The rears are even more prone to abnormal wear if you don't take care of them! I recommend all 4 brakes be cleaned and serviced once per year.

Hi,

Thanks for the replys. My front pad are at 4.5mm and 4.0mm for the back. I do maintenance once a year (lubrification).

I will ca few shops. At the moment, I got a estimate for 400$ for the front for premium quality. If I add 60$, I will get ceramic pad, but the guy told me that the first few brake are not as effective as after because they warmup.

New pads: 11mm front and 8.5mm rear.
The minimum wear thickness: 2mm front and 1.5mm rear.

So your fronts are at 50% (4.5mm/(11mm-2mm)) and the rears are at 58% (4mm/(8.5mm-1.5mm)). There is still LOTS of life left in them.

Based on your current mileage and wear rate, your brakes should be good till about 70,000km. IMHO, the dealer is selling you an unnecessary brake pad replacement. The math... replacement in 6-8K km does not add up.

Just keep cleaning and lubing the brakes as you have been doing, and keep a close eye on the wear. Also, the inboard pads tend to wear much faster than the outboard ones if the brakes are not properly maintained. Keep this in mind and make sure you measure the thickness of BOTH pads.
