Hello forum....

I have a brake question. My Versa has 60K on it and basically 80-90% of that is freeway driving. My back brake kind of makes a sound when I first back up but after that nothing. In the past couple weeks the brakes do squeak now when I am coming to a stop. Not unbearable and not anything I was not used to hearing in my old car (a Ford Focus that sounded like a bus bc of the squealing brakes).

So I took it in to have it looked at and the shop said the brakes "fine". But when I drove home, it squeaked at shorter stops, but no sound at longer ones. I also just got the oil changed but if this is something that is going to ruin my rotors, I don't want to wait around 3500 miles to have that happen. Is it normal to have this sound? Keep in mind my driving is almost all highway with minimal braking in a very flat area, so my brakes tend to last a long time.

I am just wondering if the shop is lazy and did not feel like changing pads or if they are wanting my rotors to get trashed so I have to get new ones or if I am paranoid and everyone is out to get me (lol)

did you see you pads personally? or did they tell you that they were ok? you could just have dirty rotors....

The front pads should be close to worn out by 60k miles... I'd get a 2nd look at those pads from someone else. I could be wrong but my pads on my old Neon always wore out at about that amount of miles.

Doing brakes on this car is gravy work for any shop or any tech, if they said they were fine they were probably being honest. 35k on mine and they still have the taper on the pads and shoes, similar driving conditions. 70K wouldn't surprise me.

Is it your rear brakes or the front breaks making the noise? The rear brakes are drum brakes, not disc.

If it is the front brakes, I'd definately take a close second look. I've only got 40k miles on my versa and just had to replace the rotors because they were already warped so badly that my car shook violently when braking from speeds of 55 mph or higher.

In addition, the pads are designed to cause a high pitched squeal when it's time to replace them.

I had to do my front brakes around 40k, but I think I was pretty rough on them, and it was mainly the fact I was starting to get a shake, so I had my rotors surfaced. The last couple weeks, ive been getting the same rear drum noise you described, it all started with started to hear them squeek when I backed out of my parking spot first thing in the morning.

On top of that, my CEL came on for my bank 1 O2 sensor, and that one is not easy to get to, let alone $135 at autozone.
