Are the metal plates behind the brake rotors really necessary, why?

Is it better to remove them?

The dust shields? Prevents brake dust from going all over the place, yes you can remove them.

Leave em unless doing Q or Z32 brake conversion.

My question originates from photos I've seen of different brake setups, particularly when converting to bigger brakes.

Usually most setups don't have these dust shields, why?

the rotor is too big and the caliper is too big...so they're cut offf...unless your doing a brake upgrade keep it on like rico said

But then, after the brake conversion, there should be dust problems all around the suspension and shafts, right?

Forgive my questioning, I'm just trying to understand. See, I had this brake trouble in which I think something got trapped between the shield and the rotor. I don't know what was it but it scratched the rotor and damaged the pad to the extent that it got worned in half the time.

This was the inside pad and it damaged the rotor, I'm waiting for a new one.

Brake pad material is like sand... and when it gets into the seals of your $1000+ dollar coilovers you'll care.

I don't have $1000 coilovers, if I did I wouldn't be worried about brake dust damaging them.

Why wouldn't you worry?

I personally know several people who have no dust guard on their setup over here and have been that way for years on end and I've seen japanese people do the same thing. I've never heard of any problems with suspension. So I'm not too concerned. That's just me though, just tellin you what I've seen.
