i was wondering what the consequences would be of not putting in the metal clip on the caliper?

which clip are you talking about exactly?you can get away with not using shims on the pads, but more often than not, clips are essential.

the metal clip that goes in between the pad and the caliper.

sounds like a shim, and you can get away with not installing those. the only clips that are needed are the top and bottom retaining clips from what I remember. Those actually keep the pad from falling out of the caliper, shims are there to reduce noise.

what if you didnt put one of the clips on the bottom of the pads?

will the pads fall out?
