Brake pedal and steering wheel locked, car won't start.

My wife was stranded for a while today. When she went to start her 2014 Murano after shopping for about 30 min, it would not start.. She said a brake pedal icon with a slash through it appeared, the steering wheel locked and the brake pedal locked up after attempting to start it. She called for a tow, and when the tow driver attempted to start it, it started right up. Any idea what she could have done wrong? Is there some kind of safety interlock that kicks in after multiple start button presses?
